Default Players petition courts to release NHL emails

Hadn't seen this posted yet, but seems like it could be a pretty big deal:

I'm not really surprised about the Campbell emails. We all knew the guy was never taking head shots seriously and was much too old school to be handing out player discipline. However this is looks very poor on the league and one wonders if discipline will be one day taken away from the league and handled by independent arbitrators. It seems like there are too many conflicts of interest when the league is handing out the discipline as these emails reveal.

I doubt very much the union wants discipline handled by independent arbitrators either, so that is likely a non-issue.

Maybe the NHLPA should be more involved in the process.

I'm sure they wouldn't but sports like hockey and football may have no choice eventually as we have probably only hit the tip of the concussion iceburg and as big of a business as they are they may not be sustainable as they currently operate. There's lots of fear in the US regarding head injuries in football and it's not going to go away.

Maybe this will force things to become more above board. These backdoor polics at the hands of a few powerful individuals seems so amateur hour to me, especially when there were / are medical professionals around. Those culpable may be 'paying the price', in the lawyer sense. I won't be shedding too many tears either.

Hartley has at least advocated the use of visors and it has worked for the most part. Who else in the upper echelons have been doing the right thing?

Damn, these guys write like toddlers. Dial back the ellipses there, Colie. You are an executive, for god's sake.

While I am sure some US Senator trying to deflect the public away from America's real problems via Congressional hearings into the NFL's concussion issues - which would obviously force the other leagues into the picture as well - the union is not about to pressure that themselves. My bet, in fact, is that the union wants as little to do with this lawsuit as possible because of issues like that. They will nominally support the players (naturally), but probably not lobby too hard otherwise.
