San Jose gave up their 2016 1st. Flames gave up their 2015 1st in the Hamilton trade.

It was possible to match San Jose's offer and still do the Hamilton deal, but giving up 2 1st round picks in back to back years would make any GM pause.

The only thing that could make this season worse would be having to watch this mess unfold knowing the Flames didn't own their own first round draft pick.

Listening to the Fan right now, first time in months.
Steinberg asked MTL reporter when does the trade market pick up. Reporter asked MTL GM Bergevin and he's saying the CDN dollar is weak and no one wants to make trades right now because of it. I kind of buy it, you're not going to trade picks or prospects for expiring contracts if you're not certain that you can afford to re-sign the player.

That said, he also said MTL is looking for a RW, and I feel David Jones would be a great fit for them. Probably closer to the deadline.

I hope Jones continues to score, I could see alot of teams being interested in him come February/March. Could be lucky to get a high 2nd, or if there is enough interest maybe a first. That of course is if he can get close to 20 goals.
He's been one of the few bright spots outside the kids on the Flames roster.

I think Hudler is a great fit for them as well

I can't imagine where this club would be right now if it weren't for David Jones.

Slighly disagree only for one difference, size. MTL will want to get bigger in a playoff push. I could see bigger teams with L.A and STL kind of builds being keen on Hudler.

It might be a buyer's market at the trade deadline for forwards. Just off the top of my head, pending UFAs potentially/rumored available

E. Staal
Stamkos
Doan
Vrbata
Versteeg
Ladd
Eriksson
Hudler
Jones
Tanguay
Grabner
Okposo
Marleau *not UFA but reportedly expressing interest in moving on

He's scored 1 goal in a game we won. All of his other goals came in games we lost. So, about 2 points worse, maybe.

He's not some special player. David Jones' are a dime a dozen.

I would bet that this is the first time this statement has ever been uttered.

Agreed. But at what cost?

Would anyone consider moving Monahan for Stammer? Idk if I would. Could be a knee jerk reaction if Flames brass did the deal around those 2.

Why wouldn't you? Assuming you could re-sign him of course.

Stamkos is only 4.5 years older than Monahan and in another category of player altogether.

It'd be a huge upgrade at center for likely the next 10 years.

I don't believe Stamkos will be moved at the deadline. I don't believe teams will give up what the Lightning would want for a guy hitting free agency. I don't see Yzerman trading him for an Iginla type return and no team will offer multiple 1st round picks unless Stamkos is willing to talk contract which is doubtful. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lightning go for another cup run and then trade his rights at the draft.

Looking a lot like he's gonna become an UFA. But the thing is, his next contract looks like it's getting cheaper with every game he plays. He's been terrible this year (at least for what you'd expect from Stamkos). Barely on pace for 60 points. Been fairly underwhelming ever since he broke his leg.

4.5 years is a fair bit. In addition the Flames likely get Monahan signed at $5-6M per on a long term deal where Stamkos would cost $10M+.

I don't move Monahan, Gaudreau, or Bennett unless we are getting back Mackinnon, McDavid, or Eichel and that sure as hell will never happen

I'd do monahan + for stamkos if he agreed to sign here. I dont think stamkos would cost over 10m. I think we could get him signed for 8-9. Also gaudreau setting up stamkos - with a decent defense and a good goalie would be good for a bunch of cup runs.

I dont buy the stamkos is broken because he isnt scoring at the same rate. I think he still has that pure sniper in him and could easily score over 50 playing on the left side of a powerplay with gaudreau gio bennett and brodie.

I think we would have to add a few first round picks and thats where things get iffy. monahan plus picks would be a lot. Id do monahan plus players and a single pick.

Stamkos is an elite offensive player in this league. Its a no brainer for me. I could see how others may think differently though. imagine we get stamkos and end up giving up monahan +++ and all those picks just for hamilton and stamkos and what if they dont end up playing well for us and monahan becomes a stud in tampa and the picks we gave up end up being good ones.

I can see why people would be opposed to it. However I think Hamilton is still a franchise top pairing guy. He needs time and he will be fine. I dont think any of the players boston drafted with our picks will become a hamilton.

I also think Stamkos is a huge upgrade on monahan.

I'd probably do it dependinng on the contract and what we have to add.

Agree to disagree I guess.

Stamkos is just such a big upgrade over Monahan, I would think you have to jump at it.

Teams that win in this league have super stars.
