I don't think its very often at all. Probably once or twice a month at most. He's really not gaining anything going to Calgary/Edmonton if he wants to be close to home. Toronto or Montreal and a handful of US cities would work just as well.

I think it is the fact he'd be able to get home quicker if there was an emergency.

Would rather take a flyer on Bernier than sign Cam Ward to a sizeable contract in free agency.

I don't think Ward would command a sizable contract at all. I don't think many teams are going to want to take a chance on him as there will probably be more goalies available than needed. Bernier just hasn't been that good and I don't think he'd be worth it, Ward would be an ok starter but I think he'd also be a good 1B guy and mentor for when one of Gillies or Macdonald are ready.

Anyone that thinks Cam Ward is even an upgrade on Hiller is fooling themselves.
Maybe 5 years ago. Even then Ward was very inconsistent.
Bernier > Ward IMO.

Agreed. Where Bernier is right now it appears the biggest risk acquiring him would be the extra year on the contract. When he is confident he is a solid goalie.
Looking at free agency it likely takes a multi year deal to get Ward and he is older and not necessarily an upgrade on Bernier.

Bernier has been crappy since his stupid Mendela comment.
Guy needs a team change to get on track. Am curious on what the leafs would want in return given that he's barely their backup as of now.

I imagine "future considerations" would get it done.

Could Hiller and a mid level prospect or pick be in the cards for Condon? Montreal might want a veteran presence with Price out.. And Condon could be a gamble on a younger goalie with some promise? Small sample size but could be a way of upgrading while getting rid of a contract

Why would they need veteran presence when Condon has been playing quite well and even better then both of our goalies? He will hold down the fort until Price is back.

What about trying to get Fucale from the habs? What ever happened to the kid?

I don't even see the need to acquire a goalie right now. The team isn't making playoffs this year. We might as well try and make a smart deal for a goalie who might actually be our future number 1. Not like were pressed for time here. All these suggestions seem like stop gaps which I don't think we need at this point. These guys are marginally better than what we have at best and to spend any assets to get them seems like a waste.

At this point, there is no rush to get anything done. I am happy if they take this season as one to grow on, and then deal at the deadline when teams get stupid.
Anything meant to save this season, would probably be shortsighted.

That's why I"m thinking more along the lines of Fucale, he's seemed to fallen out of favour and could probably be had for a low price. If everything went right, getting a guy like Bernier now would only get the Flames a 10-15 pick instead of a 1-4 pick at this point.

This guy was always overrated. He was never the reason his teams won (either CHL or Team Canada).

Kind of going against my own advice, but if we were to target a goalie, I would like to see us try for Raanta. He has really good stats, albeit with very limited games. He probably isn't being utilized as much as he should be, being behind Lundqvist. I am sure that the Rags like having him as insurance though.
Then give Raanta the rest of the season to see if he is the real deal.
Like I said though, probably not worth trying to sell the future for instant improvement, but if the Rangers are looking at a playoff run, perhaps a veteran back-up and some depth forwards (with retained salary) would entice them, plus a future consideration draft pick if we re-sign him.

Take a chance on Bernier? His stock is pretty low right now.

100% true.
And it seems like goalies are available in the off-season. The Flames whiffed on them all last summer (looks like that it was good to miss on Talbot, but Jones could have been a great solution).

I would see if Toronto would do a 1 for 1 swap for sure. He can't be worse than both Hiller and Ramo.
Listening to Barnaby on NHL radio, says its pretty bad if the leafs are going with Sparks over Bernier and he must be in Babcock's doghouse. Carries on to say its almost impossible to get out of Babcock's doghouse once you're in it.

Unless we passed on Hamilton, I don't see how we'd have had the assets to acquire him. San Jose gave up a 1st and a prospect to get him. Could we have matched that without ruling ourselves out of the Hamilton deal?
