Isn't that something eh? Last season, with an almost identical roster, the universal consensus around here was nothing but love and admiration for that team. "One of the most fun Flames teams to watch in team history".
So we add on a couple quality pieces in Frolik and Hamilton, and now suddenly it's the worst Flames team ever.
Hockey sucks like that. One single break in the off season can totally throw your team off the bridge when it comes to chemistry and systems. The Calgary Flames franchise is one of the most inconsistent hockey teams in NHL history. Nothing but ups and downs. And other then some years in the 80s and early 90s, never a team that was consistently at the top. Even if the rebuild of this team does pan out and every young player hits their primes all at once, I doubt we'd see the Flames near the top of the standings for any extended amount of time. It will be one season high ,a couple low, repeat. That is the fate the hockey gods of relegated to us.
For all the talk of the Sharks being labelled chokers, they are easily one of the most consistent teams. Year after year, always competitive and near the top. How enjoyable it must be to be a fan of a team that you know will be competitive for 82 games. Playoffs are a different story, but at least they make it every season (except for last).
Everything about this team just sucks this season. And it's extremely frustrating for everyone considering it's the same god damned team as last season. What the hell happened to everyone in the summer??

In my mind there are two major changes this year vs last:
(1) PK: The loss of Byron (lots of speed) and Bouma (lots of blocks)
(2) PP: Wideman/Gio/Russell lost big strides making the point very weak, Hudler is playing with less creativity and speed
Both PK and PP are killing us, while the goal-tending is murdering us

yeah I was watching Florida vs Florida state game and watching our offense was awful and getting your butt handed to you by your rival sucks. Then I went to turn on the flames game and saw the score and said NOPE.

If the team doesn't start trending upwards by the end of the season like 2013-14 after the deadline, expect Hartley to get the axe in offseason and Treliving to suck it up and take the high draft pick.

Yes, Paul Byron and his 3 points this year and his 19 points last year would save this team. Paul Byron is a tweener. People seem to have this weirdly fond memories of him.

I think the flames can get a 2nd for Rusell depening on how many d-men are on the market come the deadline.
Raymond does not get you a 4th. No team is trading for him and i will be shocked if he is not bought out at the end of the season.

There were rumors that BT wore out phones trying to drum up interest for Wideman in the off season. No takers. So if he was untradable then, he radioactive waste now.
Hartley is probablygoing to go soon. Not because of personel issues, but brcause he lacks any creativity to fix this mess.

If we're going to draft this kid I'm going to need to know how to pronounce his name...
As of now, he is Pull-Joo-Jar-Vee for me and I have a pretty good feeling that's wrong.

Last year: Gaudreau dipsy doodles, passes off to the point, oooh what's going to happen?
This year: gaudreau dipsy doodles, passes off to the point, D guaranteed turn over/missed shot/poor play
When gaudreau passes to the D this year, the play is essentially over.

By no means am I stating that Byron would have changed the fortunes of this team but it's statements about strictly points that bother me.
Byron did A LOT for The Flames especially on the PK, which included getting the puck out of our zone and spending considerable time in the neutral zone or better in the offensive zone (even if he couldn't finish).

I hate to say it, and I haven't been one of the posters saying it, but Hartley and his crew need to go. This team needs to start back at zero and the rest of the season will determine who stays and who goes. I thought that an experienced coach like Hartley could turn this group around and employ the "always earned, never given" philosophy. But we've only seen the opposite. The old tricks aren't working and Hartley refuses to learn any new ones. And worst of all, his players haven't done him any favors -- if I didn't attribute this dismal play to a crisis of confidence, I'd be convinced there's a silent revolt in that locker room.
Pull the plug Treliving. Give guys who care, like Grant, Agostino, etc. a chance. I'd much rather watch some twenty year olds figure things out than watch a bunch of burnouts who've long since forgotten.

-Refuses to pressbox Wideman, rewards him for crap play with PP time
-Keeps giving Russell top pairing minutes
-Lets Bollig out of the pressbox
-Gives Granlund 6 min of ice time

Montreal is second in PK% and Byron leads their forwards in SH time on ice per game. He also has two SH goals. Yeah I think he could help our PK out.

I haven't been following but isn't that number inflated due to the fact that he didn't start for the first 9 games or so as there was no spot available and he was learning the systems and all that? I thought he was pretty regular after that.
