Pujuliarvi, Laine, Matthews. If theFlames miss the playoffs, any one of those 3 are amazing picks.

Jesse Puljujarvi reminds me a little of Olli Jokinen.

With playoffs being a very slim chance now, I wonder if Brad Treliving will start to look at the options to deal some of the expiring deals for assets. It would be fantastic if we could snag up a few 2nd and 3rd round picks or maybe a possible 1st. Use those picks and try to get a RFA similar to the Dougie Hamilton deal last year along with what is currently looking to be a top 5 draft pick with ours. So that may leave us with a some options:
- Top 5 Draft Pick
- Grade A RFA/UFA
- Top 5 Draft Pick
- Multiple 2nd, 3rd round picks

Would obviously love to see Auston "Powers" in YYC, but my somewhat realistic wishlist at this point is for Jakob Chychrun.

Can the Flames afford to pass on a high scoring FW in lieu of more defensive prospects though? I'm aware BPA exists but organizationally, a legit RW scoring prospect is BPA. Or Matthews lol.

Central scouting has updated their players to watch list.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=789295
34 players received an A ranking which means candidate to be a 1st round pick in CSS's opinion
B ranking means 2nd or 3rd round candidate.
C ranking means 4,5,6th round candidate.
Someone was asking about Ty Ronning before. He is ranked a C

Haven't researched the top prospects other than Matthews a whole lot. It's looking like the Flames will have a high pick this year so I'm going to start doing some research. I'd like to target either a scoring winger or a defenseman. I think with Monahan, Bennett, and hopefully one of Jankowski or Granlund we're set down the middle.

The top 10 of this draft is loaded with big skilled wingers. Matt Tkachuk, Patrick Laine, Jesse Puljuarvi all look like perfect fits for the Flames.

Jones, Hudler, Russell, Hiller, and Ramo are our expiring contracts.
I'm sure most people would be happy to get a medium-sized dog back for either Ramo or Hiller at this point, but Russell, Jones, and especially Hudler could bring back significant returns.
You think goal-starved Pittsburgh would be willing to give up a 1st to get Hudler? What about Tampa Bay? They're currently out of the playoffs and not exactly lighting it up. They've also got to worry about showing Stamkos they're serious about winning.
In the West, Nashville and LA and (if they get their act together to make a push for the playoffs) Anaheim could all use additional scoring.
There are, however, a bunch of really interesting forward UFA's this year, including E. Staal, Stamkos, Kopitar, Vrbata, Eriksson, Boedker and Hudler. Depending on how the season shakes out it could be a real buyer's market for forwards at the trade deadline.
Or Staal, Stamkos, Kopitar, and Eriksson resign, the Canucks stay within spitting distance of the playoffs (gross), and suddenly the top of the market for forwards is Boedker and Hudler.
I think it's not unreasonable to to think we might be looking at having two picks in the 1st round again this year, but that's a long way off and involves a lot of speculation.

You know that LA is tied for first in the division, right?

When I "bumped" it the thread was about half way down the first page... Not much of a bump.

I really wouldn't get my hopes up for returns for Hudler or Jones. Second tier wingers generally do not get much. Cammalleri couldn't even garner a 2nd round pick and Jones is no better than Glencross, who although returned two 2nds was pretty much a disaster for the Capitals, I don't see teams making that mistake again. Russell might return a 2nd as defensemen are always needed come playoff time.
This year's tradeline could be significantly impacted by Stamkos situation. If he's not signed, he's going to get traded and like Kesler two years ago, that might stall the entire trade market and Treliving could be stuck without a trade partner for Hudler and Jones, who really are not significant pieces to add to a Stanley Cup contender.

As always the whole article is a very informative read.
Nephew of former Flame Denis Gauthier may make for an interesting pick for the Flames if they find themselves out of the top 8

Your Cy Young front-runner through the first quarter of the season is Val-d’Or Foreurs winger Julien Gauthier.
He didn’t register his second assist of the year until his 20th game, but already had 15 goals on his stats line by that point. But that’s all good because he’s on pace for about 55 goals. Who wouldn’t want someone with his size (6-4, 221 pounds) and finishing touch on draft day? Gauthier scored 38 goals in 68 games last season for Val-d’Or.

I watched the game in which he played for the Q against the Russians. He is a very fast skater with a cannon of a shot.

They already traded their 2016 in the Kessel deal, their 2015 1st in the Perron deal and traded their 2014 1st rounder Kapenen in the Kessel deal as well so they may want to eventually keep one of their first rounders, but Rutherford seems to be an idiot so who knows.
But if they are getting frustrated with Pouliot I would gladly take him for Hudler. But doubt that would happen.

Kind of pains me to do it, but looked at sportsclubstats.com this morning and if the flames go .500 for the remainder of the season the chances that their seed is top 5 is at 92%
my point is that the flames don't need to be all that bad going forward to find themselves with a lottery pick, and even without any hint of tanking all signs will point to a high pick this year.
still though..it's only november..pretty crappy how quickly this has happened this year.

I didn't think he looked out of place as the only (I think?) draft eligible guy at the 4 game summer camp for the WJHC team in August. He wasn't a star but you could definitely see the natural talent he had.
