I think he's going to leave there too... I just don't see him getting nearly as much as he did on his last contract. I think a lot of teams will line up for him at the deadline though.

Friedman says on 960 that Eric Staal has Nashville written all over it.

He also said Kypreos suggested Montreal.

Yeah but it was just his opinion. IMO all 30 teams will be looking at a player of Staal's caliber. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility the Canucks make a big push for him as they set themselves up with a few expiring contracts this year with trades they made over the summer. Heck I could even see Treliving kicking those tires if he can unload the Wideman contract and not sign Russell (oh please God don't let this happen).

I don't think Calgary would be part of the rest of the league looking for a centerman. Do we need Staal with Monahan and Bennett around? Not sure he fills a pressing need we have. Not to mention we'd have to committ alot of money and time (likely) to a guy who's what, 30 years old?

Does anyone else feel that most of these hockey heads suggest the same team every time?

The number of times I hear Montreal come up in any/all talks is crazy. Like they know a GM is working the phone, so every name gets mentioned in relation to that GM/team.

I don't know, if there was a time for Montreal to go all in, now would be the time. Would make sense for them to be involved in any and all big names on the market.

Friedman was talking more in lines of who would actually trade for Staal at the deadline. Unlikely the Flames will trade for a pending 31 year old UFA who besides Stamkos (assuming TB goes down that route) will be the biggest name at the trade deadline.

I am sure all 30 teams would look at the possibility of signing if he hits free agency.

Those will be some pretty exciting trades if they happen. Hopefully the steep prices of those guys makes a Hudler trade look a lot better.

Or if you believe some of the explanations on the Cammalleri non-trade, prolonged Stamkos/Staal trade talks will push Hudler to the back burner in the trade market and leave the Flames with nothing or much less than what you would expect.

I am wondering what the market will look like this year. Last season you got Glencross going for a 2nd and 3rd , Winnik got a 2nd and the year before guys like Vanek, Gaborik were getting similar returns.

If the Flames have no intent on retaining Hudler they need to try and at least get a 2nd for him.

I agree with this. No more Cammalleri-esque BS. Trade him for what you can get, even if it's just a 2nd and a B prospect. This team needs to keep building and letting UFAs with trade value walk in non-playoff years is counter to that. Hopefully Treliving has already decided he's a seller and is testing the market for Hudler with the expectation of trading him for futures. I would argue both he and Russell should have been shopped hard at the draft.

Well, Hudler had just won the Lady Bing and was a key component on the hottest line in hockey at the time. Even early in this season it looked like that line took off right from where it left last season.

But Hudler has to see the writing on the wall and that could be why his game has taken a nose dive.

But.. A 2nd and a meh prospect? Hudler could be the best option for many teams at the deadline. If not for their own team, but even to simply stop another team from picking him up.

I think there could be a bidding war on him.

Or BT should be Snow Jobbing the league to pump up Hudler's value!

Hudler will get a lot more then a meh prospect and a 2nd round pick at the trade deadline. A lot of GM's heading to the playoffs will blow their brains out to get his level of skill into their top 6.

That's what a lot of people thought about Cammalleri in 2014. It really depends on the players available. If Stamkos and Staal are really available, then Jiri Hudler is plan C or D for a lot of GMs at the deadline.

I hope your right. 2 years ago Vanek, Goborik, Moulson got very little in return. Flames couldn't get what they wanted for Cammy. i can definitely see him moving to a team like the Habs or Rangers for their cup pushes.

Why though? He's a small 50-60 pt winger that's soft and not good defensively. I know if I was a GM of a contender, I wouldn't move heaven and hell to get him. What exactly makes him better than Cammalleri? We should've sold high on him in the offseason but now it's apparent that last year was just an aberration.

True but Cammalleri missed time with a concussion that season, which had to have hurt his value. IIRC, he was out for over a month and came back just barely before the deadline.

And im certain many GM's regretted not giving up the asking price on him after that deadline e had passed. Do these guys learn? I guess Cammi was the lesson, not the rule as many pickups at the deadline don't light it up come March and the rest of spring..

Hudler is not a 30goal 70pt guy but 50+point wingers are good assets. Also why is he so bad defensively? I have witnessed plenty of back checking from Hudler in the past and he does okay on board battles for a guy with his size. He is an extremely smart hockey player.

Also the sell high in the offseason comment is completely right in hindsight but unless the Flames had a top line winger they were going to pick up then it wouldn't have made sense. Hudler is a guy that helped both Monahan and Gaudreau immensely in their rookie years and appeared to be a big part of the team culture.

Flames had aspirations to be better this year so selling high on guys didn't look like the right move in the summer

That's what Feaster would have done and it got him fired...
