I'm honestly going to miss Ian, he was a complete scene stealer in ROTJ, and played the arrogant jerk so well. He was a incredible bright spot in the prequel trilogies and the opera house scene was incredibly well acted and you could see the malice just under the surface.

Is there no Ian in the TFA? That might be cool. He was supposed to have learned something about cheating death.
In the now discarded EU he did, which I hated, because frankly it took the whole story of Vaders redemption in terms of destroying the evil that seduced him and pooped on it, then splashed him with vomit.
I prefer the idea that Sideous never learned to cheat death, his master never learned to cheat it either.
Ironic he could save others from death but not himself.
The Jedi stumbled on the secret of immortality in terms of being able to let go of your physical self.
The Sith on the other hand couldn't do that because Sith can't let go of their power and have a fear of death because of that.

Von Sydow's part in the movie has been revealed through a children's book based on the movie, the contents of which is out there now (though supposedly leaked prematurely).
If you wish to know:
Spoiler!
Spoiler-ish details ahead, don't proceed if you don't want to know his part in the story.
Spoiler!
Von Sydow is revealed as a character named Lor San Tekka, rumoured to be a man in possession of information vital in the quest to find the missing Luke Skywalker. Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron meets him on the desert planet of Jakku, but they are interrupted by the evil First Order. A message is placed inside Dameron’s droid, BB-8 and he is sent off into the night.
Spoiler!
From this it sure sounds like the movie is following in the steps of ANH if true.
