Ortio clearing waivers and being in the AHL probably increases his value from where it was yesterday.

Now that he is in the minors he has a more flexible development path than "sit on the sidelines not playing in the NHL".

Not that I think that the Flames truely plan on trading the kid. He just needs to get some games under his belt and get into a groove. He could still be the starter for this team by the end of the season. The Flames crease is still wide open at the moment.

I wish it was even looser!

Phew, I have to admit I was a little nervous he'd be claimed. Glad he cleared and can get some AHL playing time as that's really what he needed this season from the get go. Now we have Hiller/Ramo fighting just like last year, hopefully that will get the Flames back on track!

Based on this season Mason McDonald should rank above Ortio. But based on what we knew during the summer, there was a good case to rank Ortio where we did.
I will say I've never been on the Ortio hype train. I've always believed at best he would be a placeholder for Gillies. He's had one AHL season where he looked to be better than average but outside of that his AHL numbers are pretty middling. Yeah he carries a Finnish passport I get that but at the end of the day one AHL season of a better than 0.920 SV% isn't nearly enough to convince me that he's a top prospect.

That said I was hoping that he would get a full opportunity to be the backup this season and then the team signed Ramo and things kind of snowballed to today and we are left with nothing but question marks all around in regards to the position. It's the self inflicted wounds that are the hardest to take and this was self inflicted by the Flames management team.

Thankfully he cleared. I felt Flames would've regretted this years down if he go claimed.

What a surprise, I could have sworn it was Lundqvist we we're waiving.

No, that would be trading for Bouwmeester.

Is there any reason why we haven't seen him get assigned to Stockton yet? it's past 10:30 now...

No kidding. Did people seriously expect there was a pile of teams looking at Ortio and thinking "Man, I would just LOVE to claim a guy with two meaningful games in half a year - both of which he looked poor in - to be my third stringer, even though he clearly needs #1 playing time that he can't get anywhere in the NHL right now."

Going to the AHL is what Ortio needed from day one. But on day one, the odds of teams claiming him were much different than they are now. The Flames took a calculated risk, and it worked out for the best of both Ortio and the organization.

He will be back too. This year.

He probably already has. Teams are sometime slow to announce things.

There is also a possibility they are waiting for final clearance for Hiller to be removed from IR before they make the assignment.

Not a big surprise to me - while Flames fans are certainly excited about his potential (and he demonstrated some great things in limited viewings last year) he really didn't do anything this year that would make teams covet him.

Off to Stockton, where I hope he plays a ton and gets his game back.

Agreed on all that. I too was never big on Ortio and in fact I think stated that I was worried I might be under-rating him. I still may be doing that.

I would dearly like to know the true story behind how the summer played out. From piecing together what some of the local media has said it sounds like there were a couple of things at play
- Flames were in on Talbot and Jones. Landed neither
- Flames had a deal in place for Hiller that fell through. Possible destination was San Jose which evaporated when they got Jones

So here's what I think happened
- Flames thought they could get Jones
- Intent was to run a Jones/Ortio tandem this season
- They had a deal to ship Hiller to San Jose, with no intent to sign Ramo

Then Jones got signed by San Jose which took away both their first choice to be their #1 this season AND the landing spot for Hiller.

At that point there was some panic and they signed Ramo because Hartley didn't have confidence to go into the season with Hiller/Ortio

Something like that. It went sideways for sure.

I think Ramo was signed so they would have a capable #1 if a deal for Hiller materialized during the course of the season.

Unfortunately, Hiller has looked like garbage so any teams that may have been suitors in September probably aren't now.

I agree though, I think the plan was to get one of Jones or Talbot. I think the Hiller trade falling through was the catalyst, but only with the hopes that he could be dealt part way through the season or towards the deadline for any team that got a subpar or injurious start from their starter. The irony of course is that's what happened with Calgary and Hiller.

I'm still hopeful for Ortio. That high ankle pretty much ruined his last season and this year he just couldn't get in a groove. With Gillies likely to have hip surgery he will get he chance to play everyday now. Let's hope he recaptures the form we saw in his short stint with the Flames last year.

Ramo is not a capable #1. It was a panic move, which turned out to be prudent because Hiller got hurt.

Ortio in Stockton playing tonnes of games is likely what is best for Ortio and the Flames long term. Sending a young goalie down is not a death knell for a career. I think he could be back this year.
