It doesn't just have to heat the cabin, it has to heat the batteries as well. The range hit is pretty significant depending on the temperature. Tesla owners seem to say it's better if you set it to charge and heat half an hour before you leave or something, heating the batteries from the source power rather than from the battery.

My boss just purchased a Model S about a month ago. He has been loving it and drives it from Calgary to Canmore between his homes weekly with no issues as of yet, even in some cold weather driving. Guess just wait and see how it goes over the full on winter months, but I don't and he doesn't either suspect there will be any problems.

There's one here in Moose Jaw, guy drives it everyday, if its gonna get a winter test this would be the place, lol. Mind you it's been beautiful so far.

Would be nice if they can perform as advertised, and hopefully one day EV's can be in the reach of the average joe.

Sitting on top of a big magnate that charges the batteries at all time, I wouldn't buy one until I'm done having kids.

You'd rather sit behind a fire spewing carbon monoxide and other noxious fumes?

What I want, is a small to mid size electric truck, made by Tesla, for a reasonable price.

Would love a Tesla - If I had more money kicking around, I probably would have put down a deposit for one of the first Model S's.

Isn't a majority of Alberta's electricity generated from coal? If not a majority, a good chunk nonetheless. Not exactly clean.

Doesn't matter, it's still cleaner. I'm not talking carbon emissions or pollution, I'm talking about health effects. You don't spend your commute next to the coal plant exhaust

90% of Alberta's electricity is fossil fuel based and about 2/3 of that is coal, Factor in typical line losses @ 50% and you've essentially got a coal powered car with an engine that is <50% efficient (in terms of emissions).

Cost of electricity in alberta is ~$0.09/kWh and gas is about $.90/L which converts to $.095/kWh (gasoline is 34.2MJ/L), so a cursory look at the fuel shows it is cost comparable and I'd guess Tesla has a more efficient engine and comes out on top (unless winter really does kill fuel efficiency).

Tesla's would be great in places with clean and cheap electricity, but we are not one of those places.

I love the Tesla Model S. The feel and the power is insane.

But the Aston sounds better. I'm not giving up my car any time soon.

I looked at the S the other day at Chinook, beautiful car. The window sticker said 2.3L/100km IIRC that is phenomenal for a car that has at least 400hp. From what I've seen on Youtube cold weather is not an issue at all for the car, actually you have a much better chance of being stranded in a petrol burner.

It might be worthwhile to wait a bit for this. I agree the price of a Tesla isn't worth it right now, but soon could be.

On the side, the post about the guy with a Tesla in Moose Jaw made me laugh. I thought of a story I was told by a guy who worked at Chrysler about Jordan Tootoo. Guess when he got his first big check he bought a Viper and decided to go stuntin' back home in Nunavut. Had it shipped up there. Problem is there is virtually no paved roads. So he was ripping around the car in the dirt roads. Always gives me a laugh about these high end cars in weird places.

That's not how the car charges, induction charging wouldn't be viable for that kind of load.

Different battery chemistries. Chevy volts use Lifepo4 batteries compared to Tesla using Nmc or ncr 18650 cells. Lifepo4 even in warm weather are known for high voltage sag and a low c rating discharge rate. At cooler temps lifepo4 will show a greater internal resistance causing even more voltage sag and lower discharge c rate.Lifepo4 is often used because the life cycle rate is much longer than othe lithium chemistries as well as a flatter discharge curve.

The chemistry Tesla uses is less effected by cold weather. It can maintain less voltage sag and keep a low internal resistance which allows the battery cells to disharge at a higher rate with less stress.

2 questions as I know you're quite knowledgeable here:

1. You've factored in line loss with electricity, but shouldn't there also be loss with combustion? The joules in gasoline don't all go to power do they?

2. Even with full coal power an EV will get similar carbon emissions to an efficient combustion engine. Still a win, no?

Ya, it's crazy, we actually have electricity and plumbing here too.

The only thing odd about a Tesla in MJ is there is Calgary would be your closest dealer, but there are some in Saskatoon and Regina, which are even further. One recently was totalled in sk and went through salvage with a 35k reserve.

For a small town we have our fair share of high end cars.

Haha, the exact same joke I came to make. Well played.

Although I will add, I don't think there is any proven link or impact on sperm production from magnates, just given the sheer number of kids Donald has.

2.3L/100km? Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean?
