Coaches are always preaching consistency, so there is definitely a positive to be had

In all seriousness though, the comments in this thread and the GT thread were quite simply over the top. There are maybe a handful of posters who admit Gio is playing bad, but they aren't saying terrible things about him. And that is refreshing to see.

I'm legitimately concerned about his play since I thought by now his play would have turned around. I still think he will turn it around, I just wish it already happened. Furthermore, if the TEAM is to be turned around, it needs to start with HIM. Just like it did 2 seasons ago, and last season too.

You can't sit your captain. Gio has to simplify his game. It's the classic "I'm going to do everything...."

Crosby, Toews and Getzlaf are struggling... even the most elite players go through slumps.

First time since joining CP that I've even noticed that feature. Do people commonly use this?

no, but if it gets a minimum number of votes, the mean star rating will appear next to the thread on the fire and ice page.

Yes, but you know he was struggling mightily before last night right?

Gio has to get back to his form of any of the last 3 seasons. Either that or Hartley should bump him down to the 2nd pairing and Brody plays with Hamilton for a few games in the 1st pairing. Hartley has to try. If what you are doing is failing and you don't change your stategy you will not succeed.

This whole thread, especially the OP, is just undignified.

Giordano has been inconsistent this season. He's had games where he was the best player on the ice. And he's had poor games overall, where 2 or 3 terrible mistakes have significantly impacted the game.

But most of this thread (and especially the OP) isn't a discussion of those struggles. It's just over-the-top melodrama.

Seriously, without a word of exaggeration, this is like the kind of thing Flyers fans would write.

Quotations around captain, meanwhile Gelinas is on record having said Gio is the best captain he's ever been around.

Gelinas was captained by Mark Messier, Trevor Linden, Ron Francis, and Jarome Iginla.

Really pathetic comments by a few here. I'll say it again; embarrassing.

Um when? He's had games where he's been adequate and maybe even good but lately you can argue he's been the worst defenseman on the team. I've championed this guy since the Sutter days but lately I'm scared when he's on the ice and the game is in the balance as he's like a grenade right now.

I agree some of the posters comments are over the top, but I think the Gelinas comment is over the top too, and part of the problem.

Gio is not and will most likely never be in the same class as the guys you mentioned. Expectations are too high.

We have a good player, and a good captain, and a team that caught lightening in a bottle last year early in their rebuild. It's easy to start heaping praise in a situation like that.

I think the concerns about his play thus far, and the contract, are valid. This is not a 23 year old d-man we signed. What if he doesn't recapture the level of play he did the last couple seasons? Not to say he won't be playing well at times, but really, will he be in the Norris conversation every year for the next few seasons? Maybe not. But it seems like that's what people are now expecting.

It's not discussion worthy how our captain and supposed best player has seemingly transformed into a depth defenseman? And he was just rewarded with a retirement contract that hasn't even kicked in yet and he's already playing to a level of a $3m dollar player.

Emotion is clouding both sides of this debate but it is impossible to not talk about it given that it is one of the biggest stories for this team right now.

It was pretty clear to me last night that he's just trying to do too much. Maybe worried about justifying his contract? or maybe trying to right the ship all by himself?

Either way, he has to keep things simple and smart. He'll get there, no doubt.

The quotation marks around "Captain" in this thread is a total embarrassment.

Maybe if we change this to a "Mark frikin' Giordano" thread, he'll turn things around!

One full season worth of top level hockey has somehow cemented Gio into some God who is beyond questioning? He should totally be held accountable for his captaincy and play right now. Blah blah blah "he's so great off the ice guys" so what? On the Ice, you know, playing the game he's payed to play, he is one of our worst players and seems to be getting worse and it's not like whatever he's doing "off the ice" is making any difference. This team is in shambles mentally and can't seem to play even half the game. What exactly is he doing "off the ice" that deserves such praise in terms of affecting positive results?

Your captain shouldn't be costing you games.
