No surprise. Treliving says Flames plan to sign Jankowski:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/f...ark-jankowski/
Quote:
That’s something Treliving knows is a risk, but he’s confident in his relationship with Jankowski and intimated that he has every intention of signing the 21-year-old.
"In the year and a bit that I've been here I've been able to get to know Mark quite well," Treliving said. "At the end of the year last year, Providence had a great year...won the National Championship, we talked about that.
"One school of thought is you rush him out after his third year and protect yourself that you don't lose the player because he's got that option at the end of his fourth year. I believe you have to do what's right for the player. Mark and I spent a lot of time, during the playoffs, talking about what was the right decision. We were just very honest."
Jankowski is Providence's second-leading scorer with seven goals and 15 points in 11 games. He is one of just three 2012 first-round draft picks who has yet to play in the National Hockey League. Treliving acknowledged that Jankowski is very much a part of the Flames' core for the future.
"We feel we've got a real good relationship with this player. The plan is to have him signed at the end of the year. The organization knew when they drafted him that this was going to be a longer term project with him. He's having a terrific season on the top-ranked team and we look forward for him to be part of our organization moving forward," said Treliving.

"The 6-foot-3, 175-pound centre could become a free agent next summer if the Flames fail to sign him to an entry-level deal by August 15, 2016."
There's no way he's that small.

Sounds like they have a solid relationship with him and since they made a decision that put them at risk to help his career seems like he would recognize that. I assume he would have built a lot of relationships with teammates and the organization as well over these years that it would be tough to kind of turn your back on those people. Seems unlikely to me he would bail on the Flames but I guess you can never be certain.

Janko is a pretty smart kid. I'm betting he wanted his degree in case the whole hockey thing doesn't pan out in the long run.

This all points to him planning on signing with the team I think... Which is awesome to hear! He still has a long way to go I'm sure but everything about this kid sounds dynamite... Plus it would feel so rewarding for this team to have a yet another prospect turn into a difference maker in the NHL due to a patient development plan.
But I can just imagine an agent telling him that the most important thing to realize is that this is a business decision... That he needs to do what's right for himself and not make his decision based on a sense of loyalty. Cause the team would not show loyalty to him if they thought they could trade him for something better. He'll be two months away from weighing his options with any team to see what's available.
I thought the same thing with gaudreau in college and it ended up ok so I'm not really that worried about it.

Flames took a lot of heat for picking Janko in the 1st round. Lets face it they went way off the board and Jano should look at this they believed in me when not many did.
Personally I think the kid wants to fufill his personal obligation to his parents and himself and get a degree.
I would be stunned if he slighted the Flames and didn't eventually sign when the time is right for both parties.
Other GM's love him because of what he has done in the past 2 years. Now they show interest but i think his family realizes tge Flames have supported him since day 1 and helped him get aligned with Providence and advised him along the way.
There is no doubt Jankowski has benefited because of the Flames.

I really don't understand this opinion everyone seems to have that these guys care about getting their degree (with the obvious exception of JG going and getting it to appease his mother).
They can finish their degree after their NHL career. If they flame out, 10% of a league minimum salary pays the remainder of their costs. It just shouldn't be a consideration.

What a crazy post.
They believed in him when not many did? It's not like Jankowski was a 1st round pick by the Flames or not drafted at all.
Where is all this family stuff coming from? Obligation to his parents?
Jankowski wanted and was ready to sign with the Flames last spring but Treliving thought it was in his best interest to stay his senior year in College.

I don't have the tweets or articles readily available, but I seem to recall him doing very, very well in high school, and seems to enjoy his schooling.
It could very well be a combination of:
- Janko enjoying college life and schooling
- Wants to finish his degree before moving on with hockey
- Organization felt he needed more time to come into his game (maybe he felt that way too)
- Family pushing for him to finish degree (You said so yourself, but Johnny isn't the only exception)
It's very shortsighted to not consider finishing his degree. It can work into the Flames favour too. If he finishes his 4 years, that is 4 years they aren't paying him. He signs his ELC at the end of the season, and spends the next 3 years making $925k max. Calgary can very well benefit from his low cap hit over the next 3 years, especially if he is the player most of us think and hope he can be. It gives the Flames a little more flexibility with the raises coming to Gaudreau and Monahan.

I am not sure I fully understand the logistics and legal limitations of signing a college prospect. Are there any good for us strings attached to his signing by the Calgary Flames organization that are significantly different from signing a "normal" prospect? In other words, what do we have going for us other than Treliving's stated good relationship with the player?

The biggest thing is he will be able to burn a year on his ELC.

Flames are the only team that can give him a year's signing bonus ($92.5k) and use up a year of his ELC if he signs before the end of the regular season/playoffs. They can also give him a few weeks of NHL salary, depending on when he signs the contract.
That is pretty much the only leverage the Flames have over other teams that can sign him as a free agent on August 15, 2016.

Honestly if a lot of these head acratching moves Feaster made at the time pan out it could reault in him getting another job down the line

Ah, I forgot about the signing bonus. Thanks, sureLoss.
Is this amount a really significant deal-breaker for a high-level prospect though? Can another team offer him more money within his new contract or is the total first-year amount fixed and cannot be altered? If so, then I can see an immediate financial benefit to the player. Then again, even if so, it all comes down to him wanting to play for Calgary. If he prefers to play elsewhere, we do not have much leverage at all, it seems.

Nope ELCs are capped. If the Flames are willing to go max rookie salary, then that is the max all the other teams can offer.
