This talk about Hamonic and his cap being the best part for the Flames is kind of ignorant imo.

Salaries off the books in 1.5 years barring a trade

Wideman $5.75M
Engalland $2.97m
Smid $3.5m
Ramo $3.8m
Hiller $4.5m
Raymond $3.1m
Bollig $1.25m
Jones$4m
Hudler$4m

That's over $30mil coming off the books in less than 2 years. Of course those players need to be replaced. But many are going to be replaced by guys on elc's and are already better than a few on that list.

To think the Flames won't be able to pick up a guy to play top D minutes with Brodie or Hamilton or one of our guys in our system won't step up makes it clear that many are just pushing for a trade for the sake of a trade.

Gio is arguably one of the most fit guys in the NHL. No reason he can't play at a high level until 39 with minutes reducing a bit each year and someone stepping up.

And if we need someone, BT goes and gets him. At that point. Not now.

Furthermore, Gio has been dealing with a carrousel of D partners up til Brodie came back.
His issue is simply confidence, much like the rest of the team. Brodie and Gio are getting back to their game which you can see on the ice.

Come March, if he's healthy, he likely won't be "a Norris candidate" but many will be saying "if he didn't have his slow start, he'd be in the conversation".

You don't trade someone like that for cap space when you really aren't going to be in a crunch.

$ 30 million coming off the books in the next 2 years sounds great until you factor that the Monahan, Gaudreau, and Bennett extensions that have to be signed in the next 2 years will likely mean they will use close to half that $30 million combined. Salary cap is also not expected to increase a lot in the next few years.

$15 million to replace 9 players and I doubt the Flames will break in more than 3 or 4 players on ELCs into the NHL during the next 2 years.

Strange and dumb is saying the circumstances have changed. Hamonic is not a potential or suitable option to replace Giordano because there's not likely a trade to be made there.

The Flames are going to go forward with Brodie, Hamilton, and Gio as the core defensive players. Once they hand out extensions to their young players they are going to have to supplement their defense core with cheap UFA's and players from their own system as they aren't going to be able to spend $3+ million on guys like Smid and Engelland in the future. The really good teams in the league draft well and can supplement their core players with competent players on entry level deals and the Flames need to emulate that approach going forward.

Friedman doesn't think Snow wants Hamilton:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...e-goalie-game/

Quote:
8. So, where are we? GM Garth Snow’s history is he’s not afraid to think differently, avoid conventional wisdom. He’s in a tough spot, because he’s got a player who wants out, but Hamonic is an important part of a team that wants to win — and has a chance to win.

“I think 29 teams called Snow last week,” one GM joked. Many were told they are not a fit. I don’t think Calgary and Edmonton (who both want him) can pull this off without a third team.

Damien Cox reported the Islanders asked for T.J. Brodie, a non-starter for the Flames. I’d be real curious to see if they’d counter with Dougie Hamilton, but word is that’s not what Snow likes. I’ll get back to the Oilers in a minute. The Colorado Avalanche want in on this, but I’m also not sure what their match is. This is purely a spitball, but remember they were in on Hamilton. If this deal needs multiple pieces, does that work?

9. The Minnesota Wild have defencemen and, as I wrote last week, will eventually trade one. But they want a forward in return. The Islanders have to be careful, because Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo are unrestricted. They need bodies up-front this year and next. So, I’m not sure that’s a fit, either. This brings me back to the Oilers. There have been several reports that Edmonton is not willing to part with Darnell Nurse. The thing I wonder there is, if Snow is looking to replace Hamonic with equal value, why is he looking at Nurse? Nurse will be a very good player, but that’s not a similar fit in 2015. You have to think there’s something else in that offer… a forward with term, perhaps? That solves a future problem, and if the Islanders do trade a pending UFA, maybe a defender comes in return. God only knows.

10. All of this brings us to… the Winnipeg Jets. It’s the most logical fit. Hamonic wants to be there, which is such a bonus for the Jets. But if it was so easy, it would be done already. The right side of the defence, on paper, is so strong with Byfuglien, Tyler Myers and Jacob Trouba. Byfuglien is unrestricted. Trouba is restricted, but that’s going to be a hard negotiation.

I’m one who believes the Islanders’ ask is for the 21-year-old defender. Hamonic’s salary — locked in for four more years — allows you to do some things. If GM Kevin Cheveldayoff thinks he’s going to lose Byfuglien, does he want Myers/Trouba or Hamonic/Myers? I’m betting it’s the former. But what if he loses Byfuglien and gets into a stalemate with Trouba? Tough call. The hometown thing ratchets the pressure, too. And…

Absolutely agree. That doesn't make Gio's contract necessarily bad. The albatross that is our #4-6Defenders and our 3 headed goalie monster is going to eleviate the crunch to sign those key guys, that still allows BT some wiggle room with the bottom 6 fwd ranks and shoring up that D.

On Hockey Central at noon some interesting discussion.

Islanders don't want Dougie because of that contract and Calgary does that deal all day long.

Also thinking the player that will eventually gets it done is Trouba. Hearing Trouba doesn't want to stay long term in Winnipeg

Anyone else losing what little respect they had left for the hockey media after the nonsense being reported surrounding this Hamonic situation? Snow doesn't want Hamilton? Are you kidding me? The asking price is Brodie, Trouba, Nurse+? Talk about a snow job.

Hamonic can rot in Brooklyn for all I care. And the hockey media is already six feet under in my mind.

If it's true that Snow would not take Hamilton for Hamonic, then he's just crazy. Equally, I think it'd be stupid of Treliving if he actually offered that up.

What a bunch of garbage that a 22 year old RH dman is an afterthought. I just want this over rated Hamonic thing to be over. Don't care where he goes because someone is going to overpay massively.

Let me get this straight. Snow would do it for Trouba, but would not do it for Hamilton? The fact that Hamilton is better than Trouba in every way? And come on. They make it sound like Hamilton is making PK Subban money or something.

Even if he were to take Hamilton for Hamonic, I as a flames fan say no way.
Just about every advantage goes to Hamilton and I think he will be the more valuable player in the long run.

I agree (and I even think Trouba for Hamonic is at least even, if not too much value given by the Jets).

The Hamonic hype train is hilarious.

I really like him, and would love him in Calgary, but is he even a top 30 d-man in the league?

Especially considering how often Snow would've seen Hamilton when he was in Boston playing like a stud. Complete garbage reporting IMO.

The guys on TV and print can cite as many anonymous sources as they want, I simply don't believe that the Flames offered Hamilton or would offer him. Give up all those picks, sign him long term, see his game start to come around and then toss him for someone who, while good, may have reached his peak for what he will be? And we're to be believe Treliving did this? I don't believe it.

You know Hamonic isn't the one negotiating a trade or a panelist on Hockey Central right? He wants a trade for family reasons.

Yes Kypreos and Maclean aren't on air for their stellar analysis. They're loud, can give generic statements on any team or player in general, and are good for heated discussions on opposite sides of an issue.

And the other guy stirring this rumor, the hack from Toronto, can't recall his name right now, has no legit sources, just makes crap up in his head and then says "but that probably won't happen." Edit: That's Damian Cox.

Maybe Snow is pulling a Br'er Rabbit/briar patch play: "please don't offer Hamilton".

Does Snow not realize that given the news, he's dealing from a position of weakness here? I certainly get trying to maximize the return from your prospects, but to expect a better or even equal player in return isn't likely here.

Not that I believe it, or that I want it to happen as I'd rather have Dougie. But if Snow is thumbing up his nose at the prospect of Hamilton in return given his predicament, he's completely out of his mind. If that's his mindset he'll never find a trade partner.
