Answer: Compressing the #### out of the data to squeeze more channels into the available bandwidth. A depressingly common problem.

Sportsnet's website is just the same as the Oiler's , It's no good. Employing Oiler shill hacks and fanbois also no good. Honestly I feel anytime I've had the misfortune of going to Sportsnet's website every article reads like it came from a 7th rate tabloid. written by hack writers who would never pass for profesional journalism. Sadly the obligatory 11 more years....

I don't need a lollipop from anyone, but if they are in the business of maximizing revenues, as you so helpfully pointed out, they should probably try to do a slightly better job at everything. That includes pointing the blogger hacks in the right direction.

I've never heard of this Willis guy before, but just looking at his past month, he has three articles bashing the Flames and two fawning over the Oilers.

As usual, the Oilers are the worst team in the NHL, so this does have a whiff of "the guy is an Oilers fan first and a journalist about 50th" to it. Hard to maximize the old revenues when nobody takes your coverage seriously.

I've always found that the national media has proportionately less Flames fans than the other Canadian teams. Hrudey is probably the only known "Flames fan" who is one of hockey's A-listers.

Read the article. As I see it, here are the problems:

1. Willis probably should have used a less strident headline, and it's legit to call out journalists for using overblown language in headlines. "Incredibly" overrated? How about just overrated? Or change the headline entirely.

2. Okay analysis but it would have been interesting to see, in the article, what his stats were when he was with St. Louis. Might have given a better indication of why Calgary thought he would be a good asset to the team.

3. The limits of analytics should be conceded. Willis might think Russell is overrated but the fact is, last year with making the playoffs on the line and our captain injured, Russell played huge minutes and helped carry the team as a top-4 guy.

I only watch games on RSN. The moment it's over I flip the channel. I never go to their website either. I simply won't support what I consider a substandard Canadian sports network.

I would, in fairness, point out that real journalists don't write their own headlines. Whether or not a blogger hack like Willis does is, however, unknown.

The analytics community behaves a lot like Rider fans or our Oiler apologists in the Edmonton is no good thread: They are a mixture of arrogance and insecurity. Don't be counting on any concession on the limiting factors of analytics as a whole.

True, often the editor makes that call before anything goes to print or get posted.

Should be expected. As mentioned the flames are the least desirable canadian team. Doesn't help that the city in general are all outsiders, there arnt many true calgarians. There's a reason why flames games are highlighted last from tsn and sportsnet lol.

I certainly don't agree with this sentiment. The Flames in general get the coverage they earn and deserve. As the Flames winning record improves, the positive coverage will improve.

As Flames fans, we also need to be able to show confidence in our team and city and be able to shrug off some criticism or biased commentary. We don't want to behave like the no-goods to our north! We are better than that.

God forbid they criticize a Flames player. If you have a beef with the guy's conclusions, maybe explain why they're wrong.

The comments on the article are hilarious... this is my favourite:

I see a lot of mentions of on ice shooting percentage, does that mean there's off ice shooting percentages? Do we actually need it clarified that they're on the ice when they shoot? Really?

This thread is clearly a complaint about what is perceived as an overly headline written by an Oiler fan. Yet you interpret it as above?

I like Russell a little. He does well for a small defenceman but there's the problem as I see it, he has trouble handling big aggressive forwards. I think he fits in better as a 5th or 6th defenceman.

The problem I have with this article is why is he being centered out when the Oilers have a much worse, much more ballyhooed defenceman, in Justin Schultz?

So losing only effects the flames coverage? What about edmonton, being #### for years yet gets coverage first. Winnipeg for being mediocre gets coverage first, flames do well last year yet I'm sure the oilers were headlining before the unsustainable flames. Not trying to sound like I'm complaining I could careless. Fact is the flames are the least popular canadian team, we're like the Arizona of the north.

I have more of a problem with your ridiculous crack about true Calgarians. What the hell is that supposed to mean?

You guys have to realize that in Canada they are more Oilers fans then Flames fans. Goes back to the Oilers dynasties.

So gotta write to your audience

Russell hasn't played well this season, but he is certainly been a solid #4/5 for the Flames. Don't really get the insinuation that he's barely an NHLer, that's just insane. He'd easily be a #3 on the Oilers' blueline.
