Conversely, if he's that good, why was Treliving so hasty to sign Ramo?

Answer your question. How has Ramo started to look better? How does any goalie get into a groove? By sitting on the bench for weeks or playing?
Ramo was signed because BT thought they could move Hiller to SJ, that's out there, you can find it. When SJ acquired Jones BT was screwed.
Look, I'm not saying Ortio is the next great amazing goalie but the way he's been developed this year has been brutal.
Right now, there's no doubt in my mind that if they waived him, he would clear. and then struggle for awhile in the AHL. It's all about confidence and he has none.

I think it's pretty obvious that Ortio will be the one sent down. Obviously Hartley doesn't have confidence in him.

Some people want so bad for Ortio to be the answer that they'll blame anyone and everyone but Ortio for why he hasn't taken the net. The management and coaches on this team want to win, if these people believed Ortio deserved more of a shot he'd be in. Short of one good exhibition game the guy has looked like hot garbage, and the most persuasive thing any of his supporters can say at the moment about him is that the other guys have struggled to. If that's the best thing you can say about someone, it kind of says everything you need to know.
I wish Ortio was our starting goalie too, but not because Ramo and Hiller have struggled, but because he's earned it. If Hartley doesn't have faith in him that's all on him.

Earned starter for the year?
Is his SV% for this year over .900 yet? Is his career SV% over .910?
Ramo has continually shown he is not good enough and now we are naming him starter for the season?

Niether of these factor's are Hartley's fault, or his job. Treliving thought wrong and got hosed. Couldn't even make it a month and he's got 7 million in cap space on waivers.
Ramo only looks better because he hasn't had to compete with 2 other goalies. Also, Hiller was the only guy who had any wins up to the time Ramo was sent down.
I'd actually like to see it as well. Waive Ortio and see what happens. Ramo won't be put on waivers again, he's winning them games. Nobody wants Hiller either.

Body of work, recent results, and practice.
Ortio has none of those three going for him.

|
Ortio hasn't earned a "fair" shot. You don't simply get a shot just for being a prospect. Who cares what the PGT thought. If it was a good method of player analysis, Bennett would be in Kingston and Mony would be our 3rd line center. Nobody in their right mind is going to base player analysis on fellow fans emotion highs of a win or lows of a loss.

I hope Ortio is pissed off. Anything, really, to encourage him to be the player we thought he might be. Would it surprise you though if he just never panned out in the NHL? It happens ALL the time, even with much better goaltending prospects.

Throw in overrate his mediocre performances and this is the same way people treat Ramo. He has spent his whole career showing he isn't good enough and yet people keep coming up with reasons he should start.
When he first start in the NHL he was too young, when he first came to Calgary he was adjusting to the new rinks, last year he was injured and this year it was the 3 headed goalie system.
The guy constantly puts up sub-par numbers and people constantly come up with a reason why.
Even during his current run of games he has ranged from average to below average and because people have such low goalie expectations all of a sudden that is looked at a good thing or a positive and this guy should have more starts.

San Jose traded for Jones before July 1st. Once he was acquired i would have to think trade talks for Hiller became dead. Ramo was signed on July 1st. Maybe there was another team out there interested in Hiller, but i have not heard any rumours to support that.
The flames might have signed Ramo because they were not 100% sure about Ortio being handed a job.

I love how Treliving said Brodie makes Giordano smarter. As good as Gio was last year I think he couldn't have done it without Brodie.

Ramo deserves some credit for his play of late. I still want him fired into the sun though.
He did this last year too. Had some real amazing highs and some wrist slitting lows. Not really an in between. It's why I don't like him. Looks really good right now but I have all the faith that he'll revert.
Not sure whats true and whats not about Ortio. All I know is from the outside (where we all are looking from), Hartley wants nothing to do with the kid. It's been painfully obvious all year. It would be nice to see him get a run of 10-11 like Ramo. But , ain't gonna happen. I'd rather just waive him so he can play some games omewhere else. You don't let a develping goalie rot on the bench for so fracking long. I don't care who says otherwise. It's frustrating because We've all seen the ceiling for Ortio, and he's not being allowed to reach it.
You wasted the asset, do the right thing and move it to the farm or let some other team manage it, because the Flames clearly cannot.
The real interesting thing will now be if Hiller gets to resume his block of starts that was interrupted when he got injured. If all is fair and Hartley is loyal to his vets, Hiller should get a chance too.
I hate this goalie crap the Flames have to deal with. It's frustrating as a fan seeing a good young prospect withering on the vine. Even if he is not good in practices, he needs games.

Hiller should get a 2nd class ticket to Stockton as soon as he's healthy. Terrible goalie. At this point just play Ramo for the rest of the year haha.

If Ortio is flopping around letting everything in on practice scrimmage games would you seriously hand him the ball to run with it in a real game? If the guy cant even hack it in practice that's his fault. Lets face it we are back to having scrub goalies like the era in-between Vernon and Kipper. None of these guys are very good.
HM to Freddy Braithewaite though I think he was better then these 3.

I've read it before but I think thats a ridiculous excuse, fact is Hartley has no confidence in him. That's on Hartley too, pinning him on the bench forever, then playing him against the like of Rangers, Isles, Habs on the road? What did he expect from him?
Ortio is at fault but Hartley needs to takes 80% of the blame in ruining his development.
|
Well I think right now he's still up because Hiller has been injured.
I anticipate they are trying to trade Ortio for anything and if they don't find a taker - they will waive him. Or give him a chance to go down for a conditioning stint.

I agree, but it struck me a little odd for someone who quite likely would have won the James Norris last year had he not been injured. I think much of Brodie's rapid development has been due to being able to play with Gio.
I was glad to see Gio back in form last night.

You might be right. Once/if Hiller has his conditioning stint, it seems like Ortio will be sent down. I'm pretty sure Hartley is involved in these kinds of decisions.

He's been up all season though, which could be Treliving worrying he'd be claimed off waivers.
There might be a few teams who would take Ortio. The Oilers are still in 30th, after all.
