Ovechkin is one of those electrifying players who is just great for the game - the type of player you tune in to watch even if you don't like the Caps at all. For me, he's probably second only to Theo Fleury in that regard (some home town bias there obviously).
Gaudreau has that unique watchability. So does Kane and, I'd argue, Subban. Players like that are great for the NHL.
Personally I love Ovechkin's play. He was always my pick in the Crosby/Ovechkin debate, not because he's necessarily better, just because he's better to watch.

Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer of all time imo.

Show me a guy in the NHL all-time goal scoring list that was a 2-way player. Nobody has been better at scoring goals than Ovechkin over the last few decades and he's in rarified air as one of the best all time. Nobody can take that away from him.

Combine his goal scoring ability with his speed, power, strength, physicality... I think we're all lucky to have watched him played live. Truly once in a life time hockey player.

A little off-topic but Nicklas Backstrom has to be one of the most underrated NHL players over the last 10 years.
587 points in 592 NHL games.
6th among active players in PPG behind only Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Jagr, & Stamkos.

I think he's probably underrated because while his point total is high, he has been playing with arguably the best player over the last 10 years (which definitely helps his point total).
You're right though. Great player.

From the top 20 list these guys were all better than average defensive guys:
Messier, Yzerman (2nd part of his career), Shannahan, Sakic.
There are many guys on the list that aren't the absolute zero's defensively that Ovechkin is as well.

Mario Lemieux was a much better goal scorer.

That's debatable.
D-men in the late 80s and early 90's weren't the most mobile, and players with skill could dance around them, which Lemieux did regularly. Not even mentioning the level of goaltending.
These days the game is much more of a level playing field, yet Ovi still sticks out among his peers. For that reason, Ovi's goal scoring is more impressive that Mario's.

I always felt like Mario could score almost whenever he felt like it.
I don't think anyone will ever score "5 goals 5 ways" again.

I wouldn't have guessed Fedorov was top Russian - maybe Bure or Mogilny
http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/natio...eer-stats.html
Bure had 437 goals in 702 games. 0.623 gpg.
Ovie also 0.623 gpg.

Shanahan wasn't what I would call a two way forward. The best like Bossy and Lemieux weren't 2-way players.

Lemieux was IMO the greatest player in the history of the NHL but I don't see what that has to do with anything here as I'm not saying Ovechkin is a better player or goal scorer.

I was a huge Fedorov fan growing up. Amazing player. That said, he was always shielded from the other teams top defensive line in Detroit. He never had to carry a team like Ovechkin has done from time to time. When he did (Anaheim/Colombus), it really didn't work out too well for him, though that was later in his career.

wtf are you talking about?
Federov played Defense with Larry Murphy and Forward with everyone.
How on earth can you shelter a forward by making them play defence?
