Why is Hamonic a 3/4 guy?
He led the Islanders in ice time last year and they were a play-off team and better than the Flames. This year he is again leading them in ice time and they are once again a play-off team.
It isn't like he is getting a ton of ice time playing for a bottom 5 team he is the top defenseman on a legitimate team.

My point was he is a 3-4 guy on the Flames if he was on the roster right now
Better than Gio? Nope. Better than Brodie? Nope. Hell, better than Hamilton? I still say nope.

Well Gio would be gone and if not right now I would much rather have Hamonic playing ahead of him.
I would have him on the top pairing with Brodie if he was added now ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton may pass him in the next few years but for this season I would have Hamonic ahead of him.

The over rating of Hamonic is beyond ridiculous. This guy is not better than Gio or Brodie. He is 3-4 on the Flames and I think Dougie has more upside.
I could be wrong but I thought the Leddy-Boychuk pairing are the top 2 on the island?

I think Hamonic is good, but at this point, it might make more sense to be aggressive for Varlomov in Colorado.

I am not sure who is the "top pairing" but Hamonic plays almost 2 more minutes a game than Leddy and that is with Leddy getting 1:30 more of PP time a game and also plays 1:30 more than Boychuk. So whether he is on the top pair or not he is clearly playing more minutes than they are without padding his stats with PP time.
Did anyone say he was better than Brodie?

Not Brodie but I get the impression some think we would be acquiring a top 2 Dman and the prices some fans suggest agree with that. I personally think this is a second pairing guy that brings a lot of great things to the table
The "trade Gio straight up" is insane and is totally overrating Hamonic.

The key to the Flames getting Hamonic would have to be Russell signing a quality contract. Obviously add parts as necessary...
Why would he (Russell) do that now instead of testing FA?
Doubt the Flames get Hamonic and I would much rather they spend assets on upgrades to G and top 6.

A lot of that is probably people overreacting to his slow start and wanting to trade him in case his contract becomes an anchor.
If Giordano was playing like pre bicep surgery Giordano, this conversation isn't even happening.

Wow 7 seconds more per game than Boychuk and not even top 60 for minutes among Dmen in the league

Well he is going on season 2 of being the top guy on a play-off so not sure why it is a stretch for people to think we are getting a top pairing guy.
I would drive Gio to the airport myself if NYI would trade us Haminic for him straight up. Great deal for the Flames but doubt the Isles would do it and for PR reasons Flames probably don't do it either.

They sent out Hamonic almost anytime Gaudreau was on the ice when the Flames played them this year. It's pretty obvious who they considered their top shutdown player.

Hamonic- 23:20
Boychuk- 21:53
That is TOI/Game from NHL.com so seems like a fairly good source for information and unless my math is wrong is more than 7 seconds.
And he is 29th in the NHL for ice time for defensemen but that is a pretty crappy way to judge guys in my view. Since more balanced teams are obviously going to even out the ice time compared to teams that rely on 1 or 2 guys.

Using your logic Russell and Wideman averages 2-3 minutes more per game than Haminic and were the top pair during the Flames stretch drive to get in and 11 playoff games so they should easily get it done.
I think your thoughts on Gio are completely off. TSN had Gio as the 27th best player in the entire league ranking 7th among Dmen. Why would this Islanders want a player like that? He has had a rough start to the year and clearly you are writing him off with the whole "I will drive him to the airport comments"

Whoops. Thought we were discussing 2015-16. Looks like we're both right, you for 14-15, me for 15-16.
