Default Notes from Nov 19 Practice

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames on the ice at practice this morning. Hudler, Brodie absent today.

This is another recent practice Brodie has missed. I think it is safe to say he has a nagging injury.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Hiller also absent this morning. Was out early working with goalie coach Jordan Sigalet. Left as main practice got going. #Flames

Some Stamps love:

Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
Cool to see Martin Gelinas sporting a @calstampeders hat this AM. Big game for their CFL friends this weekend.

Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
#Flames LW Brandon Bollig wearing @calstampeders eye blacks, too. Nice touch.

Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
Gelinas throwing down f-bombs during positional drills at #Flames practice this AM, don't see that too often.

Incredible to have Brodie playing better than any other d man with an obvious injury.

My guess is upper body as he seems to be skating fine but is shying away from contact and shooting the puck as much as we were used to seeing last year.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Guessing maintenance for Hudler and Brodie as lines/pairings haven't changed. Raymond place holding for Hudler, Smid for Brodie. #Flames

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Fresh off of a big win on Tuesday and a recovery day yesterday, #Flames are flying at practice today.

That makes more sense about Hudlers spotty play this year if he has a nagging injury as well..

Hudler was missing for personal reasons:

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
#Flames practice notes: TJ Brodie had a recovery day and Jiri Hudler was absent due to personal reasons.

Brodie was fighting through an ankle injury during the playoffs last year IIRC. Hopefully not recurring.

Imagine how good he would be if he was 100% healthy.

Last year's Stamps tribute was cute.

Good to hear Gelly throwing down some F-bombs. Get's the point across the coaches aren't happy with the play.

I think the Flames have slowly been turning things around and it's going to be a slow grind, but it's happening.

Brodie also missed the first month and a bit with a broken bone in his wrist?/hand? So maybe they're giving him extra time here and there to rest that up.

This is very likely the case.

FWIW they said Brodie wasn't at 100% when he came back. He had to spend time learning how to play through the pain. Hopefully it's still getting better and not progressively worse the more games he's playing.

I hate to say it but if Marty is that pissed off after a win there is something wrong with this group at the moment.

I have no problem with the guys getting chewed out re: their positioning. There's no excuse for giving up the glorious opportunities in the slot they have been, even in the recent "good" stretch of play. I believe the scoring chances were 21-19 NJ on Tuesday despite their shot total.

Obviously we can't know the details, but I take that more as just because you won, you can't dilly dally in practice. 100% crisp practice drills even after a win. Never quit right?

This team can't afford slack days.

If Gio, Brodie and Hudler are all nursing injuries, I would honestly not be opposed to having them all sit, or go on IR if needed, until they are 100%. I've kind of come to accept that this is a developmental year, and having three of our best players working at full capacity in the second half would allow the team to maintain a winning atmosphere (and culture) going into what should be a big year next year.

Having kids come up and get some NHL time, and players like Russell and Wideman being showcased in significant minutes, I see as a positive as well.

Two weeks on IR for all three, and an exciting end to the season sounds like a good deal.

If this is a developmental year, we also really need to get Sam back at center. It's not like Backlund and Frolik have even been finishing on his setups.

Why? Marty runs special teams who have both been crap. Can't blame him for whipping them into better shape.

Maybe they were too satisfied with their win. It's actually a perfect time to chew them out.

Plus, look at Minnie before and after the coach laid into them last year.
