Calgary doesn't have a dedicated place like this to house all of these sports yet. Current, midhmashed fascilities are inadequate. And, especially for track and field athletes, they'll have the benefit of finally being able to train year round without having to go to the southern US at deep cost.
So it's about giving people a place to train without having to leave or give up.

It is not just for elite athletes and their training. It is for kids to have a place to play as well. I imagine soccer teams would be using the field all winter. There would be basketball leagues, the weight room would be open to the public like Lindsay Park, etc..
I think the point of the fieldhouse is that it wouldn't just be for a handful of elite athletes (Stampeders), it would be for the entire community.

Considering the total letdown that resulted from his last over-hyped presentation, you'd think Ken King would try the tactic of under-promising and over-delivering this time around. Nope.
He reminds of Lowe/Mctavish around the trade deadline. Always promising big magical things...

Why would Burke get King's job? King's job, very simply, is to increase the value of the franchise for the owners. He's done a pretty good job of that, I see no reason why the owners would be dissatisfied with King, nor do I see any reason why, of all the people in the world, Burke would be the logical choice to step into that role. Nor do I think Burke would be at all interested in the position. There's far too much politicking and glad-handing and non-hockey related activities for it to be something that Burke would be excited by at this point in his career.

I just can't believe ownership is sitting back thinking that this is going exactly as planned and are so far happy with the result.

Where do track & field athletes in Calgary train now? the Oval?
Considering the footprint ask, and limited real estate available, this layout is fantastical. Is there a more refined, realistic layout out there?

Funny, I made this post 3 months ago and nothing has changed:

How can you expect people to get behind this when you've isolated the river. The pictures of people milling about in front of the facility is on effing bow trail which is basically a freeway.
The reason they didn't was because the infrastructure costs to do this right (~400 million) are no palatable. All of the sudden the city is having to cough up hundreds of millions of dollars to redevelop an area that it doesn't need right now.
I'm genuinely disappointed with this, mostly because I kept hearing transformative and what we got was honestly, a joke.

New feature: We'll paint flames along the boards where the current OPA! logos are circling the ice.

Yes, utterly shocking that the Flames haven't moved from concept to breaking ground in three months.

Yeah, doubt it. Burke and Kings job are very different. Perhaps King is let go, doubtful as the ownership seem to have complete faith in him, but it won't be hockey guy Burke replacing him

Again I will post the question - Are we going to see the Flames win the cup first or the new arena first? Or neither for the next 15 years?

King's the meat shield for the Flames owners like Bettman is to the NHL owners. Absolutely no way he gets turfed while the project is ongoing. A lot of the criticism that can be directed straight to the owners goes to King instead. It's just part of the job. People like to say "King this" and "King that" but the truth is that he's just the figurehead for the owners and carrying out their bidding.

There may be some of that but even shifting blame to the owners says they need to hire someone who knows what they are doing. They can even leave King to oversee the teams but this project could use a new leader.

Exactly. It behooves the owners to get this arena built. It instantly increases the value of the franchise and opens up a multitude of new revenue sources.
Incompetency and the status quo probably doesn't sit too well with that group

Who says King doesn't know what he's doing? Just because some people don't like him or the announcement that doesn't mean that he's some major blunder in this project. The truth is likely opposite as the owners didn't get rich by hiring incompetent people to run their businesses. Since King has managed the ship the Flames have seamlessly absorbed the Roughnecks and Stampeders. I'm not his biggest fan myself but I acknowledge that he's not the inexperienced schumck that haters of the proposal like to paint. There's people here that are not on board and will never be and if you look at this thread it's the same people being vocal. Just because they say something does not make it true or even plausible.
