tbf I honestly believe that's what Hartley is telling them to do. Get in lanes but don't over-engage, then jump on the turnover. Hint: it's not working

And throwing a bodycheck in the defensive zone (especially defencemen behind the net) every once in a while wouldn't hurt...

I'm generally never jealous of anything related to the Leafs, but I sure am about their coaching. what I wouldn't give for some Babcockian structure right now, instead of this durrrr let's keep mixing up lines and partners and hope that fixes our collapse/block system!
seriously, collapse/block is the new swarm.

Agreed, they are coached to play like this. When it works, the flip side is they have energy for offense. Physical play is taxing.
But yeah their mental game is not there this year and they are screwing it up.

came into the trade speculation and rumors thread to read about how Hartley is failing and how the flames are playing a terrible system.
Leaving... just leaving..

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey:
LeBrun on Kris Russell: "I know teams have called about him." An asset for #Flames to move if they don't think they're going to sign him.

I actually think iggy for wideman straight up makes a lot of sense for both teams
For the avs, id rather keep duchane over iggy. Wideman is a top 4 on colorado.
For the flames, iggy replaces hudler next year and frees up room to resign russell.
Even this year, i think moving hudler or frolik down to the third line has a huge effect on depth.

Iginla has already stated he won't waive his NTC this year.

Yep...i know. But nothing is ever certain. Every saturday morning i pledge im never going to drink again
If the flames go on a tear and an offer comes in...theres a possibility he'd consider it.

Best scout not in the NHL?
Re: Berra, yeah agreed he's having a great year but at the time Burke sold him for a very good price and how Hunter Smith turns out to be remains to be seen. When Berra was here he had his moments but mostly we were disappointed in his play, he did have 19 losses in 29 games.

The Iginla ship has sailed. Outside of alumni games he will never play for the Flames again. He has no interest nor do the Flames in revisiting this relationship.

Please let's not even consider Iginla. And if we are let's not waste a valuable asset like Russell to aquire him. This team is nowhere near contention. There is absolutely no need to be going after short term fixes like Iginla.

That year was so deep and strong that you could argue 9th-11th overall picks were equivalent to a 4th or 5th overall pick in weaker years. Horvat, Nichushkin, Domi, Morrissey are pretty good pieces that I would take over a lot of top 10 picks from average to weak years.

Any trade should be made with the future in mind at this point. If I was BT, I wouldn't trade for Iginla even if he announced publicly that he wanted to be traded back to Calgary.

I thought Berra was coming a lot nicely for the Flames and didn't hate him as much as most people. Not that I really minded the trade at the time. A 2nd rounder was and still is a decent return, so I can see why Burke took it. I am not surprised to see Berra coming around though and I think the hate was more a product of the instant gratification generation not wanting to see things through with a newly acquired, relatively young player that needed seasoning.

To move on from the silly Iginla talk..
Looking at some teams and thinking we have the assets to acquire one of the following listed and not impact the core or our high end picks.
One of these guys could come in and make a positive impact.
C.Smith, Nashville
C.Wilson, Nashville
K.Palmieri, NJD
A.Roussel, Dal
N.Nedereiter, Min
B.Jenner, Cbj
T.Reider, AZ
N.Kadri, Tor
B.Nelson, NYI
E.Condra, TB
C.Atkinson, Cbj
B.Connolly, Bos
A bit more expensive would be
J.Hayes, Bos
P.Berglund, Stl
J.Huberdeau, Fla
T.Hertl, SJ
I think Russell or Backlund or Hudler + Shore or Agostino or Kulak or Seiloff + a 3rd gives you a good chance at picking up one of these guys.

We definitely should have traded Wideman last year when his value was high. Could have gotten a good pick or a prospect for him I think. Now with his contract and performance this year he's pretty much untradeable.
