It makes a meaningless game a meaningful experiment. The player draft is great, even if the alcohol consumption terrifies the league. The skills competition is tremendous, especially as the competitors get more and more creative

Bleh. They are making up ridiculous gimmicks/crap for the World Cup, but fall back on boring boring boring here.

If you want 4 teams, it's easy. USA (9), Ontario (12), Europe (10), Rest of Canada (13)

(##) are number of players from each place last year. If they are playing pond hockey, this would at least create a bit of 'pride'.

Smells like they just want Crosby and Ovy together...they'll do it FOR THE PRIDE OF THE METROPOLITAN DIVISION!!!!!!!!!!

As opposed to playing for the pride of team Foligno, or team Western conference?

Who cares, the allstar game has forever been a gimmick and a showcase of skill. Get used to it.

The draft was the best part of the all star game the last few years haha.

Except when bimbo extraordinaire asked Johnny about trademarking his name live when he got drafted.

I think it would be a lot closer to OT hockey than 5 on 5 allstar play is to actual games.

I also think a tournament format would bring out the competitiveness of the players better.
5 on 5 invites a lot of coasting. The trailing guy coasts in and takes a nice pass from another guy and scores.

They won't be able to coast in 3 on 3 unless they want Johnny or Kane or some of the other slick players making them look stupid.

What if they are tied after 20 minutes?

Two on Two?

I'm sure getting another goal at 3 on 3 in the All Star game would only take a few seconds.

Drew Doughty believes the 3-on-3 game for 20 minutes is going to be insanely tiring, but also admits the change is welcome because the last couple years for the ASG has been boring for the fans.

Personally I think only three 20 minute games is too little. Why not have eight teams instead of four and make the games 10 minutes long? I mean you get more games, more fan favorite players make it into the game, players don't need to whine about playing too hard, and if 5 minute overtimes are crazy enough I think 10 will be fine.

My interest is completely gone. The draft was by far the best portion of the event for both the kids and adults. When I think of playing video games, etc. as a kid, planning the teams and lines were the best part. I'm all for the 3 on 3 tournament and a cash prize should increase the competition, but losing the draft will be the biggest downfall

Only way they would keep the draft is if they don't serve alcohol which would make it a boring night for everyone

Man - the ASG is such a gongshow now. Baseball got it right - make the game mean something (not for money) and put the east vs the west. Then you'll get a real hockey game.

Hockey is starting to get so gimmicky now to "attract fans". The shoot-out, 3 on 3, let's make the nets bigger (I think that's coming down the pipe at some point). The NHL needs to learn that at some point they will reach a tipping point that all these alterations to the game will soon push away more fans than in brings in.

I disagree. I think that's one thing baseball has got completely wrong. The thing with baseball is even if the game meant nothing you could still watch a somewhat entertaining game. Even now it's not that entertaining and should definitely not have implications in the World Series.

I think all-star games are horrible in any sport. Announce an all-star "team" at the awards show and scrap the game all together. It's deplorable.

3/3 teams of 9+ a goalie (2 backups in total for the 6 teams). 6 teams. Two pools of 3 with a round robin. Then semis and a final.

So 9 games total max 4 games by each player. Make them about 8 minutes long.

The NBA should also adopt this type of format with a 32 or 16 player bracket playing 1:1.

Because non-contact sports are the same as contact sports, right?
