Default Ankle keeps buckling

Hey Guys,

I've been doing some research online, and it seems like I've come across Chronic Ankle Instability. Lately it seems like my left ankle will just give out and twist to the side.

I've had a few ankle injuries from Hockey/Soccer but none recently.

Anyone else go through something like this?

Well I've done a fantastic job destroying my ankles through soccer over the years and this happens to me occasionally as well, I just have to be really careful.

I'm no doctor, but as I recall from my last injury they gave me percentages of ligament stretch on each ankle and where, through physio, I could get them back to and it wasnt pretty.

Every time you injure your ankle you stretch the ligaments and they dont go back to the way they were.

Long story short, they basically told me: 'you're screwed, just be careful.'

I know it's not the same but someone in my family had a similar issue but with their knee. Doctor recommended a brace (just the kind you can pick up at shoppers) and it works well to avoid the giving out.

Maybe try that?

Probably best to see a real doctor about it before you do any further damage. A new foot & ankle surgeon was just hired at PLC with an outpatient office at the Talisman center, and his wait list is <1 month. Ask your GP for a referral.

you might want to invest in an active ankle brace as well. You can get them from most volleyball stores including http://www.canuckstuff.com

or conversely the volleydome here in calgary usually has the best price. about $45-50 for one brace.

Are you heavy? Sometimes packing around extra weight can play havoc with knees and ankles.

Some duct tape and chop sticks should fix it right up. No need for fancy braces.

You laugh all you want but I've seen a man play goalie wearing two 'caution:wet floor' signs tied to his legs with socks.

I'm about average weight for my height, 180 / 5'11.

The brace is a good idea, i'll be swinging by shoppers on my way home.

Is it just for playing? Because if its just for playing then yeah, the brace is definitely the way to go, I've been wearing one on each ankle for years. I have a stiff cloth/velcro one for soccer.

Just make sure that they're allowed in whatever league/sport you're playing, some leagues have restrictions on the type of braces are allowed.

And dont wear it when you're not playing otherwise you'll lose whatever strength you have left in your ankles.

It'll mostly be for the gym/hockey.

Good to know not to wear it outside of sports, I was going to slap it on tonight.

Thanks for the tips Locke!

What kind of shoes do you wear and do you have orthopedic inserts? You definitely need to get some custom inserts if you don't have them. That will straighten out your wonky ankles and likely everything else above. And as for shoes, heavier, high top boots or shoes are actually worse for ankle twisting. You lose sensitivity and feel for where your foot is landing. I've always worn low cut bball shoes, hiking boots etc.

I wear dress shoes during the week, and usually loafers on the weekend haha.

Oh no. You're going to have to get those terrible prescription shoes. No kidding though, orthopedics are what you need...

Here's an article that might be worth a read...

http://www.podiatrytoday.com/article/6182

Custom inserts can help rehab ankle sprains and "improve proprioception in the lower extremity".

I might suggest something conservative before jumping to an ortho referral. Besides, if it is what the majority of ankle sprains are, ortho won't touch you unless you're a teenage gymnast.

Like my answer in most of these things, go see a physio. GPs don't have specific training in musculoskeletal and won't be all that helpful.

coolstorybro incoming.

My first day in the car business in 1999. I am wearing those 'fashionable a the time' big clunky dress shoes. The Porsche salesman at the dealership, who dressed razor sharp, like $2000 tailored 3 piece suit that never goes out of fashion and wearing a $20,000 watch walks up to me, and points at my shoes and says "Those are nice shoes.................. Are they corrective?" That was the first words uttered to me by a co-worker, and it was absolutely hilarious.

Later that day, another salesman picks up my temporary business card, looks at my last name, and says "I could tell you were Polish, you have that typical fat Polak face."
