I wish Wideman only had 1 year left on his contract.

sort of like if Brodie wasn't so busy carrying the puck he would be smashing people left and right?

So does everyone in this thread understand the NHL has a salary cap? Schlemko is not better than Wideman, Smid or Engelland. But Schlemko and Hudler combined are better than Engelland and Smid combined. The salaries might be about the same next year. And those are the kinds of decisions and tradeoffs BT needs to consider.

So does everyone in this thread understand the NHL has guaranteed contracts? Schlemko's contract was up. Wideman's contract has time to run. You can't simply wish one player away to make room for another, no matter how much money you would save by doing so.

Yeah I 100% agree with you. Point I was trying to make, albeit quite poorly, is that you can't just compare player A vs B without considering their contracts. I did not mean to suggest you could just wish away existing contracts.

That's true. I think we can agree that Wideman is not $4.6 million better than Schlemko. But it's not really helpful to go on a fantasy shopping spree with the money.
The thing is, Wideman gets that kind of money because that kind of offensive skill is rare in a defenceman. Schlemko isn't exactly a replacement-level player, but there are dozens of defencemen who can do what he does.
One thing I'm sure of: No matter who ends up as the #5 D on the depth chart, both Wideman and Russell will spend large parts of the season in the top 4, because there are bound to be injuries. I wouldn't want Schlemko in a top-4 role.

According to Schlemko, the Flames tried to move out a defenceman to re-sign him:

David Schlemko really enjoyed his brief stint in Calgary, and there were discussions to keep him around for this season.
“We talked quite a bit throughout the summer,” Schlemko said. “I think they were trying to move a defenseman. I don’t think they could do it. For me, it didn’t make much sense to come back when they have six guys on the back end making pretty big money. So, I felt this would be a better opportunity for me and for them they had some contract troubles, too. So, it just didn’t work out.”

Schlemko was such a solid bottom pairing d-man. Good enough on defense, had some ability on offense, didn't make egregious errors. It's a shame that we couldn't find room for him, especially with the acquisition of Hamilton.
Hearing rumors like that makes me think Wideman is as good as gone and Russell has a good chance of being moved as well (throw Smid in that mix as well). I can't imagine Treliving was looking to move any of Brodie, Gio, or Hamilton, and Engelland was a Treliving signing.

Schlemko would have looked every bit as bad as all the Flames defensemen have looked this season. I see zero point in pining for a bottom pairing guy that if he was a Flame today fans would be throwing him under the bus just like the other whipping boys at present time because the system and collective effort has been poor.

Probably Wideman as that's the guy they reportedly were shopping. Not a bad idea for Treliving to try and sell high on him but it appears it's getting harder and harder to trade $4+ million contracts. Just goes to show how important restraint in free agency is as when you sign some of these non-elite players to substantial deals you are marrying them.

I'm not saying he would have been our savior or anything, I just liked the way he played. I thought he was a huge stabilizing presence for our 3rd pairing. Maybe it would have been different this year. Maybe he would have helped stabilize the rest of the defense while they got it figured out.
I'm glad he found a home, just a shame it wasn't with us.

Good to know that Cammy, Stempy and Schlemko are doing well so far this year. Happy for Stempy in particular as he had to settle for a PTO with the Devils initially during the preseason.

Yeah I would have guessed Wideman and Smid as well. I really like his play. If we can move out Wideman, Smid and/or Russell, I wouldn't mind seeing him back.

Stempniak is slaying for me in my hockey pool, not that anyone cares. He, Frans Nielsen and Kyle Palmieri FTW.

My guess is that they were only trying to move Wideman last summer. No chance they were trying to trade Russell, and Treliving had to know there would be no market for Smid considering he was still injured.
If they couldn't trade Wideman, after he had a pretty good season last year, they might be hard pressed to find a trade partner this year considering the season he is having.
