Generally, ya, but I think when you're drafting top 10 you regard that pick as a potential core roster piece.
Which is still not the same thing as giving up a core player off your existing roster.
Quote:
Phaneuf, Monahan, Bennett. The moment those guys were picked, they were all thought of as core roster pieces.
They were all thought of as future core roster pieces. Nobody expected them to step in and be core players right away.
Furthermore, when you trade a pick, you don't even know what player that pick will turn into. It might be a guy that the team acquiring the pick sees as a future core player, but that would not fill the same level of need on your team.
Anyway, my point stands: When you trade a pick, you are not giving up a core player off your roster. At most, you are giving up the potential of adding a core player in the future – which is not the same thing.

Looking into the Avalanche prospect situation, one thing stood out to me. They have yet to sign a single pick they made in the 2014 draft.
The Avs fired their head of amateur scouting a couple of months after the 2014 draft so it is possible management is not in love with these picks. Granted there is still more than 6 months to sign them, but to contrast, the Flames have signed every single draft pick from the 2014 draft whose rights would have expired this summer.
In particular the following draft picks will fall back into the 2016 draft if not signed by June 1st.
C Conner Bleackley 6'1'' 198lb shoots R from High River
Roy was reportedly not impressed with him at his first rookie camp with the Avs.
Is the only 1st round pick from the 2014 draft not in the NCAA that has not been signed yet
Avs will get the 53rd OA pick in the 2016 draft if they do not sign him, so that is his minimum trade value
D Kyle Wood 6'05'' 209lbs shoots R
Great size and physicality and above average hockey iq
Injury worries
RW Nick Magyar 6'02'' 194lbs shoots R
was projected to go as high as 2nd round in 2014
big bodied RW but skating needs work
took a step back in his draft+1 year
Alexis Pepin C/RW 6'2'' 224lbs shoots R
2 way forward with some offensive upside
skating needs work
I doubt the Avalanche will let all of them go back to the draft, but I could see them throwing them as a sweetener/filler or potentially doing a prospect for prospect swap with some other teams.
Of these Colorado players I would love to have Kyle Wood in the system. From everything that I've read, he could end up being that confident, steady presence on the back end that every team wants, but has trouble finding. Not overly flashy, but no one seems to score on him, and not a complete offensive liability.
Connor Bleakley looks to be a high end, character third line RW. Maybe another Bouma. Is he worth the equivalent of 53rd overall? On a championship team, 2 Boumas with a Jankowski in the middle could be crushing to opposing teams.
For whatever reason, Colorado doesn't want these guys, I would offer them the choice of our usual roster player trade bait plus a third, and be pretty happy. Prospect for prospect they are along the lines of Kulak/Wotherspoon and DeBleow/Carroll. It would be a question of trading for positional need.

Teams are waiting to see if Colorado thinks they can sign Tyson Barrie who has arb rights. If Avs don't think they can re-sign him his name will show up on the market

That would work for me.
Any time you can get quality young players for less than market value, it'll be a good thing moving forward.

I can see the Blues moving a dman if the deal makes sense with the emergence of that Pareny-whatever kid playing so well so far and the backend playing fine without Shattenkirk for a while.
Also, the trade Giordano views makes me shake my head. He was the best player last year on this team before he got injured and likely would have won the Norris. He's been out for a while and has the attitude that this young team needs to lead them. He'll be better but give him some time, he's earned it.
more than 10 teams including CBJ, TOR, LA, OTT, CGY, SJ, BUF and BOS are looking for defencemen that can play top 4.
names of blueliners available:
Trevor Daley
Matt Carle
Justin Braun
Braydon Coburn
Ron Hainsey
Carl Gunnarsson
Jake Gardiner
Kris Russell
GM Brad Treliving was busy working the room at the GM Meetings
Treliving is open for business listening to all offers and pretty much every player except for Monahan, Jooris, Gaudreau and Bennett
Flames would like to move Wideman, but the extra year on his deal might be a problem
More likely they more Russell
Yzerman has been trying to make changes
A big issue for Yzerman is Stamko's NMC if he decides to shop him. May make it difficult to get a good return.
No one can really pick up any money and there are few teams that have cap space.
You either make a deal $ for $, or you make a deal with a team that has cap space. Teams that have cap space don't want to spend money.
Oilers may have to make a decision on their blueline when Justin Schultz returns from injury as they will have 9 healthy d-men

One of these things is not like the others.

Maybe it was a typo, and he meant to write "Brodie". The "Jooris" keys are right next to the "Brodie" keys...
Just like the "Kris" and "Chris" keys. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and assumed the article would mention we're not shopping defensemen since we're looking to add one? But nope. Filing this one under G5.

Every single time Flame's rumours come up this exact sentence in this exact format is in there.
