He reminds me of a bigger Brodie, effortless skating and solid stick handling just needs to work on his distribution of the puck and better decision making. He's 17 games in and steadily getting better game by game as is the other new addition in Frolik, I have no complaints about either and feel like the start of this season is just another important step for this group overall.

With players like Johnny, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie, Hamilton, Frolik ect. being a large part of the current and future team I have no worries about a bad streak like this lasting for a significant amount of time.

I really want to see him paired with Brodie. Hartley, make it happen.

I want to see this as well I think, the pace that they play the game at is complementary and I think they could cause havoc off the rush as both have good sticks and are able to create turnovers, especially Brodie. I just feel like this defense should be so great and can't figure out why it's so poor to start the year. Again, much like the team itself, I can't see this D staying this bad for much longer, the biggest thing I'd like to see is Wideman being flipped for anything at this point.

He'll be a good #3 who earns his paycheque on the powerplay. Doesn't have the defensive acumen or the physicality to be a #1. Still a good trade.

This is just ridiculous to say at this point.

Pretty ridiculous to make that assumption when he is only 22 years old and has not hit his mental or physical prime yet.

CliffFletcher makes sense if he's talking about Dougie this season... but certainly not in the long term.

I must be watching a different Calgary Flames team. I watch from the stands and I've not seen Hamilton look good at home this year. Not at all.

I think Hamilton is struggling with Hartley's ridiculous collapse and "flop in front of da puck first" defense system. He's having to unlearn all of the good habits and instincts he learned under Claude Julien's coaching to get out of the doghouse.

Or maybe he's learning how to transition from a defensive, defense style of play to a more offensive defense that jumps into the play.

He was well aware of how to play a 2 way game with Boston.

Ryan Suter played terribly in the first 10 games with Minnesota too and hasn't looked back. It takes a while to adjust to all the little differences. Hamilton looks like he turned the corner around that time as well and has been improving significantly after.

Yeah I actually hope we start sheltering him a bit less now and see what he can do. Up his ice time from 14-16 to 16-18.

If the Flames are considering trading Russell and can't find a taker for Wideman perhaps it is time to slide Brodie to the left side.

For 1 game I would like to see Hartley but Brodie with Dougie and stick with it. This could/should be our long term top pairing. Let Gio play with Wideman and Russell with Engellend

Pulling up some comments and numbers here from around the web, and outlook is good for Dougie steadily improving.

Games 1-9, 13 ES goals against in 160:11 of ES ice time
Ari Yanover, Flames Nation:

One last note on this. Alex Ovechkin had a number of dangerous scoring chances throughout the game. Two in particular stood out to me:

-When trying to cut through the slot, Hamilton calmly took the puck from him and created a Flames scoring chance instead.

-When coming up the boards, Russell tried to cut him off, and only succeeded in falling down.

It's not like I'm judging my entire impressions of two defencemen based on two isolated incidents, but it's kind of funny when you think that the guy who fell played the second most minutes, and the guy who turned a dangerous situation into a scoring chance of his own was benched in the period his team gave up its two-goal lead.
Quote:
You can already see how this is eventually going to play out. One game, Hamilton is going to be given real top four minutes. And he's going to do well enough with them to play the next game as a top four guy. And the next game. And the next. And suddenly, bam: Hamilton is actually a top four defenceman.

I think we would all like to see this with the way Gio has been off his game. I do worry about missing Brodies incredible vision on the backhand pass though. But I still think it is worth trying out.

eventually i'd like him on the pairing with brodie. Gio could take the 2nd pairing with hickey/andersson hopefully.

Rushed bad pass by Hamilton results in a turnover tonight. Also soft behind the net, Russell is tougher

His first 10 games were awful. Lately not as bad but if he is not going to be tough to play against defensively he needs to be that much better in other areas

Watch again. I thought the same, but his stick was checked as he was trying to dump it out. However, the same damn blind pass up the boards was made by Wideman too.

There's never a forward available on breakouts. That's on Hartley
