I will always link Hamilton to Matt Barzal. Can't beleive he fell to 15 (Islanders got lucky he fell to 16). Big Barzal fan here so hopefully Hamilton can be the stud we all thought he was going to be.
He tends to be timid out there. Hopefully that changes and he uses his big body more.

Is it really possible to properly evaluate any part of this deal yet? So many things can change in 2 years with all parties. Hamilton's 22 years old and has played 17 games. Maybe we should give it a few more games, or years.

Hamilton is 5th among Flames defensemen in TOI/GP so far this season. Whether or not he's the 5th most talented defenseman, he's the 5th most utilized.

Way too early to call it a bust. It will take years to properly evaluate this one. I admit that we aren't seeing the early returns that many were hoping for, but the big picture is nowhere close to being realized yet.
Having said that, I always felt it was a big price to pay and that the deal was not a steal by any means.

You and I and at least 90% of CP and every single writer or analyst evaluated right after it happened and had the Flames winning by a large margin.
It was was not possible to evaluate the deal at that time but it didn't stop us from declaring a TKO.

For obvious reasons. Dougie was coming off a very impressive ELC which included a 42pt in 72 game season where he played tough minutes. The perceived value of the trade was he likely would be worth a top 5 pick. He signed a contract that many thought was fair to a down right steal.
When the Bruins went off the board with their pick it stung even more. Hamilton had a similar value last year as many would perforce Monahan to have now. If the Flames traded him for the same package this forum would melt down. If he struggled for 20 games I don't think that would soften the blow. If he struggled for 2 years then yes it would feel better.
If Dougie is #5 on the Flames all year and into next year then Bruins fans likely feel better but a 17 game sample size doesn't tilt the scales in their favor.

Dougie got thrust into a new team and role. The role was #2 dman. And that team was about to hit a wave of unprecedented suck in goaltending, which completely made him lose his confidence. The early games where he was often Wideman levels of bad and we were all praying Hartley sat him.
Right now the new team jitters seem to be out of the way and he's mellowing it out as one of the more consistent dmen we got. I'm seeing more confidence and poise. I also saw more of an edge late last night. And yes, he's had some pretty bad brainfart mistakes... but so has Brodie. I'm not that worried that he will have one of those poo the bed games anymore.
If I were to rate our dmen lines by pure performance..
Brodie - Hamilton
Gio - Engelland
Russell - Smid
Wideman

The trade looked great at the time, still looks awesome and will look even better two years from now.

I'm sure I didn't post my opinion here cause I was on vacation, but I remember talking with my buddy and feeling that the cost was high; not too high, but 3 good picks is a lot to give up when you are a future team like the Flames.
Nevertheless, I believe Hamilton (Dougie) is going to be a great player for the Flames for years to come.

Hamliton has quietly been pretty good over the past 5-6 games. Starting to play more like himself.

Not sure how you would rank our defence, but I think it would be similar to,
1. Brodie
2. Hamilton
3. Engelland
4. Russell
5. Gio
6. Wideman

Agree with #1, 2, 4 and 6.
Swap Gio and Engelland.
Russell could possibly be 5th with Engelland ahead of him as well.

I thought Engelland has been quietly been one of the best. Has Giordano costed us any games this season? Yes. Has Wideman costed us any games this season? Yes. Maybe you could replace him and put Russell there, but he was struggling at the beginning of the season whereas Engelland has been consistent all season.

There's a difference between the types of players that Gio and Engelland play against...

True. Yet last year Gio was winning us games playing minutes vs top lines whereas Engelland was losing us games vs sheltered competition. So credit where it's due for Engelland.

Engelland played with Brodie a lot as a solid pair in the latter half of last year. So many people try to slot D men based on perception of their talent as individuals
I must remind that Sarich-Gio were lights out down the stretch on a non playoff team, putting up a 16 game streak of not being a minus
D men in the NHL I can say with a decent degree of confidence respect that manner of assessing performance

The Hamilton trade was a great trade at the time it was made. Period.
And now, knowing what I know about the last 17 games, it's still a great trade. My view on it hasn't changed one iota. We got a potential future #1 defenseman for picks.
Great trade then. Great trade now. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

The Oilers spent a 1st and a 2nd on a 21 year old who has only played 8 games. Flames spent an additional 2nd on a 22 year old who is steadily a 2nd pairing guy at the moment. Have little doubt Hamilton is going to be a top pairing guy, along with Brodie, on this team for many years.
Looking more settled and less flustered each and every game. Love his shot, both wrist and slap, and his ability to carry the puck or join the rush. Outlet passing needs work, still forcing things there.
