I really wouldn't mind attending any of these games if I had the chance. I can't see these games having too much nastiness and the players would likely be fairly laid back so it would probably be a good chance to meet some players and get some autographs.

Did people actually think it would cost them $3700 to go to a single hockey game? Really?

For 2 tickets..I thought it was possible. I paid crazy amounts for Olympic and cup final tickets in vancouver. Toronto is usually way more...

So yes, yes I did

If this was in Calgary I'd be all over it.
But it's not so I don't care.

Whatever your thoughts on growing the game and who gets paid what, when the puck drops this will be a best-on-best tournament. The players will want to win it just as much as they want to win an Olympic gold medal, and the hockey will be great. And everyone on this board will watch.

At any price, this tournament will flop. It has the tackiness of NHL All-Star festivities with the unimportance of....NHL All-Star Festivities.

ABSOLUTE GIMMICK! A TOURNAMENT ENGINEERED FOR RATINGS! HOGWASH!

That being said I am looking forward to watching (from my couch) and most interested in how the U23 team does! Woo

what is your definition of flop?

i would think in canada the tv ratings will be huge, and the TC games in Canada will likely sell out even though the tickets are far beyond my budget.

Anyone interested on splitting cost on these? Would love to hit up some of the games, and I actually really like the tourney and format of the teams personally.

Haha! It's barely worth watching for free on TV.

National Interest.

I think more fans would be interested in a traditional World Cup format. I think the Gimmick has turned a lot of fans off.

Since the finals will be a best of three, there may be 16 or 17 games played in the total tournament.

The tickets are being sold as a 17 game package, so I wonder if there is a refund if the final ends in two games?

People of all types watch sports that they wouldn't regularly watch otherwise, which has potential to increase it's popularity (but of course, not necessarily profits for the NHL).

Thing is, "building the game of hockey internationally" is not the NHL's mandate. It will act in that direction if such growth intersects with its own business interests - such as originally going to the Olympics and the European Series games - but if the NHL does not exist to be altruistic and if it decides the benefits are not worth the risks and costs, the league will act in its own best interest. Growing the game internationally is the IIHF's job.

To that end, there is speculation that the NHL may go to the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics anyway, for one reason: the league may view China as an untapped market.
