When the conversation of Berra is brought up i think of 2 things. His great shoot celebrations and 6'7 Winger Hunter Smith.

Just had to laugh today when I saw that Reto Berra now leads the NHL in Save % and GAA. I know he's only played 6 games, but it's a bit painful to see the Flames 3 goalie circus this year and Reto Berra playing lights out for the Avs.

We still won that trade, even if the pick itself was likely wasted on a 4th liner. Berra was hot garbage here, there's no reason to believe he would've improved had he stayed in Calgary. Bedsides, he's a backup, we need a starter... not some inconsistent tweener who will likely be out of the NHL in 2-3 years.

I always hoped Berra would work out for us... That windmill kick save is never getting old.

Ya you usually don't judge a career based on 6 games. Especially with goalies who can be Vezina trophy caliber one year and barely holding on to an NHL job the next year.

Berra got special attention from a Goalie Coach that believed in him and convinced the GM to go out and get him, and got sheltered minutes behind a bona fide starter. Not to mention he was hot garbage when he first arrived in Colorado, but they've persevered with him over there. That would have never happened here.
Call me when he takes over a starting job from someone. Until then that's as good a trade as you're likely to see for a fringe player.

I seem to recall that he was at his best in shoot outs.

I really like Berra. I did, and still do, see potential in him. His flaws all seemed very coachable.
Still like the trade, I don't think he would have worked here since we dont have a starter to shelter him behind. But I hope he finds a lot of success

Different ways to conclude who won that trade. Looked good at the time. Not so good now.
Maybe Avs saw something we didn't. Not judging after 6 games but in the end, GM's get evaluated in hindsight.
Would you trade a 2nd to get him back right now? I still wouldn't, but I might think about it. Would I trade Hunter Smith to get him back? Probably but not everyone would.

Interesting way of looking at it but I think you answered your own question. If you wouldn't trade a 2nd for Berra now, after substantial improvement, there is no way we didn't want that trade. Who we picked isn't really relevant as it is a byproduct of the trade, not the trade itself. If we picked the next Gaudreau with that pick it wouldn't have made the initial trade more of a steal IMO.
Personally, I wouldn't trade Smith for Berra mainly because I think trading assets for backup goalies is a bad move. If we were to trade a guy like Smith, I would prefer he was packaged up with other assets for a legitimate starter or at least a guy who has real potential to be one.

I hope its not one of the trades that come to bite us in the back later like Martin St. Louis

Will not happen. Unless you think Berra is capable of a Vezina and Stanley Cup as a starter.
Besides, St. Louis walked for nothing, Flames got a 2nd rounder for Berra.
At the time, the Flames would've been doing backflips if someone offered a 2nd rounder for St. Louis.

Paul Byron is the only possible MSL 2.0 candidate IMO.
Not that I wish Berra ill will, but I don't think he will be able to really make us regret this trade. IMO, both teams win.

Really? Paul Byron is possibly a future Art Ross caliber talent?

Even though this is an old Reto Berra thread that was bumped, we should turn it into a "how Paul Byron would have saved this franchise" thread.
The guy is so good, they'll probably create a trophy for the NHL awards that only he can win. The Flames have let a lot of good players slip through the system and have traded them before they should have (in hindsight) like Savard, Giggure, Hull, Gilmore or even the pick we used to take Trevor Kidd over Martin Brodeur but all of those pale in comparison to losing Paul Byron.
Berra is playing really well right now but the Avs and Flames play a different game so there's no telling if Berra would have been good here. Byron on the other hand would have had this team in first overall...I mean the habs are only doing that well because of Byron.

I liked Berra's athleticism but he had the worst catching hand of any goalie I can recall. My plan for him, if we had kept him, was to buy him a baseball catcher's mitt and have him play catch every day in the summer. I suspect North American goalies are good with the glove because of having played baseball as kids.
