I was looking for some videos of laughably-bad 1980s goaltending, and found this one of the night Gretzky hit 50 goals in 39 games. Keep in mind that both of the goalies in this game were future Vezina Trophy winners too. Peeters actually won the Vezina the very next season.
This video has so much to notice: Horrible goaltending; the Flyers wearing their long pants; "Season's Greetings" painted on the ice (why don't they do that any more?); hardly anyone in the stands wearing jerseys; Don Cherry doing the colour commentary.
I'd much rather see 3 or 4 goals a game of the quality we're used to seeing today than 5 or 6 goals a game of the quality seen in this video.

Not just the goaltending but because of the post expansion and no eastern bloc players, the talent level on most teams was thin.
Basically you would have a top two lines and then 6 guys that were bear league players and cement heads.
On defense the bottom 2 probably couldn't skate backwards.
Goaltending was horrendous.
Also players usually played 2 minute shifts with a lower level of fitness, so line match up's became huge.
As much as people think that the 80's were the glory days of offensive hockey. It was the era of slap shots from the boards and the blueline beating un screened goalies.
the game shifted in the late 80's because of teams like Edmonton and Calgary who were incredibly deep teams. But then you had teams like Hartford and others who could barely ice a competent lineup.

We've still got a team like that in the league.

Hockey used to be soooo bad. Its miracle we are where we are today.

I tend to agree that this is basically inevitable. They've tried nearly everything else. At some point, the nets will get bigger. I suspect it will be in some way that doesn't make them look very different (sort of how they made them shallower but it's hard to really notice on TV).
Come to think of it, they already did change net size when they did that; the precedent's been set. I give it maybe 2-3 seasons before it happens.

Other than 1989 (and part of '86), the 80's were terrible.
In all seriousness, the more old school people in the game need to stop recalling that hockey as the greatest hockey that ever existed. It was terrible in so many regards. Trying to get back to that is unrealistic, and probably not best for the game.

It seems that guys like us (who prefer hockey the way it is) are considered "old school"
If you watch the 86 game 7 between the Flames and Oilers (two of the top teams of the day) it's incredible how slow it was, how much holding there was, how crappy the goaltending was and just how weak the game was.
From what I remember, when the Flames hired Glenn Hall to work with the goalies in the mid-80s, he was given the title of "Goalie Consultant" because the very idea of having a Goalie Coach was completely unheard of at the time.

So much about that video to like though. From Gretz getting 50 goals in 39 games, to the Philly track pants, big hair and no helmets for half the players, the non stop offence and of course Cherry doing the colour! Would have been an entertaining game to be at for sure!
As far as bigger nets go...the bottom lines is more goals means more excitement, probably better ratings and hence more money for the NHL. Given this they will figure out something.

And there's lots of crummy goals in today's game too. Different kinds of crummy goals, but crummy goals nevertheless.
I don't want the NHL to get to the point where a 3-2 OT win is considered a barn burner.
You guys are saying that game where Gretz got 5 was more entertaining than today's game? That legit looked like rec league hockey with a few ringers mixed in. The defending gave me anxiety attacks.
In today's NHL, everyone is good. Everyone can skate, and NO ONE is as lazy as these lazy ass d-men in that video.
Yes there are crummy goals in today's game too due to goalie mistakes, but that is the exception rather than the norm. In that era, 75% of the goals were crummy goals that ANY goalie today could save.
I prefer the talent level of today from the goaltender on out. Good players make good hockey. Not necessarily more goals.
To add, it would be nice if there was a realistic chance of some scoring records being challenged. I fail to see how adding 2 goals per game would "ruin" hockey - it would still be the same players - they would not forget how to play if the net was 18 sq. in. bigger. BPL regularly outscores the NHL these days - adding more goals to soccer sure ruined it.
It was not long ago that I wanted to see goalie equiptment smaller or nets bigger however I have really come to appreciate a goal in this era of the NHL. A goal means so much more than it used too and is something you want to watch the replay on. It also allows for more action in-between whistles. Hockey is at its best when you go 10 minutes without a whistle and end to end action.
Make the glass at the ends of the ice higher... less pucks will fly out of play and you will see sustained pressure more often leading to more goals. (only half kidding as I do think it would add excitement)
