You agree to the multiplier and type it in before requesting the Uber. You're notified of the total cost after the ride is over.

The surge multipliers I've seen are around 1-3x. Maybe those people misunderstood the crazy high surge multiplier for the actual total cost?

It was x3. It was UberBlack from downtown Toronto to Brampton and normally cost him ~200.

What puzzles me is the number of stories about on-going poor taxi service yet so few complaints about taxis/ limos reported in the City's 311 app.

Are these taxi stories recent events?

Has there been a correction effort within the industry as a result of previous complaints?

Has the public burned out?

I often take a CAR2GO to the airport. I like it, but live where I'm often only a block or two away from one.

Dude you're way over-complicating this. Another transportation option = good.

I gave up trying to complain about taxis prior to there being a 311 app. I also gave up putting myself in a position where I need to call a cab.

17 drivers have been charged in the City's sting operation for a total of 65 infractions (just under 4 infractions per driver): http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...hire-companies

Also, the Taxi & Limo Advisory Committee has approved a recommendation that would allow drivers to use city-approved apps for picking up fares. The recommendation will be presented to Council on Monday, and could lead to a draft bylaw by mid-December.

Well that sure was quick eh? Now of course they'd be telling you this has been in the works for the past 38493 years...

Looks like some crankyness on the Uber Forums...

Got mine this evening as well. I just can't believe how much time and money they invested to go against Uber where they could do so much to avoid real crimes.

That disturbs me so much.

We are simply helping Calgarians to be safe.

Remember this is not commercial. It is called Ride share. And we are simply splitting the ride.
AHAHAA! keep telling yourself that. I understand the concept that it could be a ride share, the reality is, no one operates an Uber vehicle like that. Including you, buddy.

I think its interesting that it happened Sunday and Uber has yet to do or say anything. Also, holly hell is that a big stack of documents!

I sent in a complaint last year about a particular driver and had the plate number and nothing was done. I attempted to follow up and wasn't even provided an update as to if the driver was disciplined or even notified. What's the point?

What load of goods did these morons buy to think they were participating in a ride share?!

I would encourage everyone who "has never had a problem with a cab" to go downtown at 2AM and try their luck. Better yet, do it in December when it's -20 and you are freezing your nards off, and let me know how you feel about it in the morning.

Bon chance.

Did the city just basically say they are building their own uber app or did I not understand that article?

I'd love to see camera footage of the abuse passengers get from drivers. Cab companies would never acknoledge or release those though.

Usually when I'm taking a cab I'm not in much of a state to do anything; let alone submit a coherent 311 complaint.

Now that would be funny.

'Drunk 311 complaints!'

I'd read those.

Maybe a bit more from the Saddledome, but I'm mainly coming from work or 17th ave. These are pretty short fares, yet I have never had a cabbie tell me no, and I can't even recall any of them asking me where I'm going before getting in the cab, much less kicking me out after I tell them. My response to which would be, "Sure, but that's illegal, and I'll absolutely be reporting you and doing what I can to see your license is suspended as your taxi number is clearly printed on the outside of the cab". But that said, it's literally never happened.

I have had bad experiences with drivers, including the "no credit" thing. Certainly share the pain of the impossibility of getting one in many circumstances. But nothing like the frequency of problems exhibited here, and I probably take about a hundred taxis a year. Is the fact that 75% of those fares are paid with a taxi chit the reason, maybe?
Some of them don't like taxi chits either. I had a full on argument with one in my driveway who first refused my taxi chit, than refused my visa card, and demanded cash. My wife came out and defused the situation by giving cash to the piece of thrash because our arguing woke her up. Had my wife not came out, I'm sure I would have ended up on the news the next day that I had assaulted a driver over the fare completely ignoring what had started it. I complained to our office manager that he refused the chit, and she was livid as they are personally responsible for getting you home after they have served you alcohol. She lodged a complaint, but it was pointless as they did nothing and basically said "Hey, you don't have to use our chits if you don't want to".

My work has happy hours once every couple of weeks and we get taxi chits on the regular. That's the only time I've had someone reject a chit, but routinely they tell you to "Put a large tip, your work is paying" and are not happy when you don't. Our office has a 15% max on taxi chits, and I have to explain otherwise.

I find it funny that there's 46 pages of people sharing the ridiculous experiences they've had with cabs in Calgary, yet there's a couple of people here saying that these can't be happening as it's never happened to them.......

Yeah, there's 46 pages of lies with 3-4 posts of truth.... Give me a break.

I've lived in Moncton, Saint John, Halifax, Toronto, Wasaga Beach, and Boston, and I never once had a problem in those cities like I have routinely had in Calgary. Sure there were cabs I didn't like or maybe they tried to pull something over one me, but nowhere but Calgary have I flat out been told to get out of cab when I tell them were I am going, or had them roll by me with their window down asking me where I was going so they could debate if they took me or not.

At the end of the day, I don't care if I get a cab or an Uber, and I don't give a crap about price. I want to get to where I am going when I want to in a reasonable amount of time. For ten years that hasn't been a regular occurance in Calgary, and since Uber came that has completely changed. I'm not some pom pom waiver for the company, and if they situation was ever fixed, I'd probably go back to cabs for the insurance issue. Without Uber though, the possibility of the current situation ever being fixed was Nil. The Cab companies can either assimilate now or the GTFO of the market.
