Thats a shame, might you know of a list of Union teams with hilarious names?
Speaking of which though, I'd love to learn the difference between Union and League. I mean, its obvious to me that what I know and played is Union, but what are the differences?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
League basically stops every time there is contact, and restarts with the ball tapped off the foot. I never played league and don't watch it much at all. Basically it's like full contact buggers, if you ever played silly buggers.
So game starts, guy plows into contact, defence moves back a few metres (5?), ball gets tapped back or rolled back, and play starts again. It's fast and I can see the allure, but I just never got into it personally.
ETA: they also have what amount to downs in football in league. I think it's 5-6 runs and then possession turns over, so they usually kick to the other team on the last down. It's just a very different game because of the lack of battling for possession.

I cant understand why a team with the awesomesauce name of Rabbitohs would have any part of that.

Drop kicks and penalties are worth 1(IRRC). 6 tackles and the ball turns over. After the tackle, the tackled player must get up and heel the ball back towards the half-back. Same size field as union, but marked differently.
There use to be more physicality League, that has changed in the last 10-15 years. Rugby has caught up.
League can be a good watch, there are certainly some players in League. That being said, I prefer Rugby.

That sounds too much like Football (Arm-Egg not 'proper') to me.
Slava and I were watching a few of the RWC matches in the pub and as soon as the match is over they switch the TVs to NFL and when you watch one right after the other it really hits home how different they are.
I'm a very, very casual football fan at best but man is it ever boring after watching Rugby.
I will however maintain that 'Rabbitohs' is a brilliant name for pretty much anything. I'd name a kid Rabbitoh.

It was funny to open this thread and see the Rabbitohs being mentioned. They are probably the most popular sports team in Sydney, I see those bunny logos plastered everywhere. If you are looking for a Union team with a silly name maybe try the Waratahs or Brumbies.
League is an entertaining sport and I would recommend it to anyone who is a Union fan. It is not very well known though as it's only really played in Northern England, two Australian states, and a few neighbourhoods in Auckland. A cross between Union and American football is a good way to put it actually. It basically operates on the philosophy that in Union the rucks, scrums, and line-outs go to the attacking team 80% of the time anyways so why not just get rid of them. This results in a faster paced more athletic game that promotes try scoring. I also find it more physical, even after the recent elimination of the shoulder charge, as penalties that would result in a send off in Union are just a warning in League.
The problem with league however is the predictability. With the 6 tackle rule teams usually run the ball up the middle 4 times, then try one creative play going wide, then kick. This is repeated for 80 minutes. I much prefer the variety of a Union game.
Finally just to tie this thread together, here is a picture of Sonny Bill Williams playing against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Definitely a very entertaining history with the schism of the amateur union to create a professional league. The spread of League in Australia is also interesting as it has become the most popular sport in Queensland and New South Wales while Rugby Union is more of a niche sport played only in private schools and supported by the upper class.
Did you get a chance to watch any of the 2015 NRL grand final? Even though my Broncos blew the game it was one of the most entertaining sporting matches I have ever seen. Also, Johnathan Thurston might be the most talented rugby player in the world in League or Union.
Sad day with the passing of Jonah Lamu. He's the reason I got into rugby. I remember watching tapes of him at the 95' WC. What a stud. RIP Lamu

There isn't another rugby player on the planet that came come close to his affect on the game.
I never met him, but I played with/against guys that met him & played against him. They had nothing but love for him off the field, on well "I felt like an insignificant speed bump"

Desperately sad news. Gone far too soon. My husband had the honour of sitting with him at a luncheon in Twickenham years ago. Such a great all round, down to earth guy.
