^Exactly. It shouldn't be taken seriously.

My format:

8 teams of 6+goalie

2 pools; round robin format for each pool (12 games total; either 4 or 5 minutes games)

Seed the teams 1-8 (alternating pools; tiebreaker is goals scored)

Determine winner through Royal Rumble style sudden death challenge.

Teams 7 & 8 play until a team scores; winner goes on to play team 6 and so on until there is only 1 team standing. Commercial breaks should be enough to keep the guys fresh.

The most important thing is to have a prize for the winning team...no brainer is a new Honda for each of them + charity donation; that should keep the effort there.

Yawn. I watch the All-Star game but I don't get up in arms about it like a lot of people. This is one of those times where "it is what it is" really applies.

3 on 3, Ok fine. 5 on 5 whatever. It doesn't matter. Just go out and do whatever and it's fun for fan and player.

I wish they didn't gimmick up real hockey, but that's a story for another time and thread.

I think this is awesome idea! The actual game is the worst part of all-star weekend. I will watch a lot more of this tournament than the regular game.

Gaudreau will dominate this tourney.

Why would the players want to skate their asses off all day? Winning is a punishment.

We played 3 on 3 for 75 minutes last week with one sub, and it was grueling.

This is a great idea. Actually looking forward to watching something other than highlights of draft night for the All-Star Game.

They'll have more than 1 sub. And the games probably won't last that long. I predict 3 20 minute games and a final.

I like this idea but I still think the All Star game should be an outdoor game with the sticks in the middle concept. Playing a game of legit pond hockey (no offsides or icings) with NHL players would be great.

And they'll use toques as posts, and instead of real goalies they'll just have fat kids who can't skate and/or the players' dorky younger brothers play in net, and they'll play until somebody takes a stick in the face and goes home crying to his dad.

Why don't they just do gaudreau vs. 3 other guys? Johnny gets a goalie and they get a goalie. We know the kid is just going to play keep away on them.

3 on 3 makes a ton of sense as an allstar format. It brings out individual skill and creates flashy plays, plus it's not nearly as physical as 5 on 5.

I think it would be a lot closer to OT hockey than 5 on 5 allstar play is to actual games.

I also think a tournament format would bring out the competitiveness of the players better.

Another thing that this does is open the door for them to invite more players to the ASG. They're not constrained to 2 teams with 18 skaters and 3 goalies each.

I could see them doing 4 teams with 12 skaters and 1 goalie on each, That would give them 52 total players instead of 42 (plus some rookies). That would allow them to easily have at least one player from each team with a lot of extra spots for deserving players.

Then, they could structure the "All Star Game" as three 20-minute mini-games played in 2 10-minute halves. Game one would be Team 1 vs Team 2. Game two would be Team 3 vs Team 4. The final game would then be between the winners of the first two games. If any games are tied at the end of 20 minutes, go straight to the shootout. This whole thing would take about the same amount of time as a regular game to play.

The All Star Draft and Skills Competition can still be done the same as usual, just with 4 smaller teams instead of 2 larger ones.

Can you imagine how brutalized the Goalies would be in a 3 on 3 tourney? They'll all be letting in beach balls to discourage fans from voting for them

per TSN:

3 on 3 mini game tournament is confirmed
fantasy draft will no longer exist
will be 4 teams divisional teams of 9-10 skaters each and 2 goalies
the 2 eastern conference and 2 western conference teams will each play 20 minute mini games
winners will play another 20 minute mini game

talk of a "ryder-cup" (i.e. NA vs Europe) in London UK instead of an all-star game in 2018 or 2019.

Any guesses for the Pacific team?

Gaudreau - Kopitar - Doughty
Hall - Pavelski - Burns
Domi - Getzlaf - Horvat

wonder how this effects the rookies?

guessing maybe they pick a west/east side of 10-12 who do their own 20 min game on skills night

would need some type of exception for the goalie though
