That just proves to me that all the anti oilsands rhetoric coming from Canadians is BS. People don't give two craps about the environment, they're just anti oil.

Or just looking for something to be a part of, like an anti oil group etc. it's basically being ignorant for the sake of fitting in with something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but VW's regular gas fuelled engines (1.8T, 2.0, etc) are really economical as well, aren't they? That would likely make up the majority of those vehicle sales in October, I'm guessing?

Here's the real reason for those strong sales in Canada for VW:
As of Oct. 1, VW Canada’s choice of incentives include finance interest rates as low as zero per cent for up to 84 months, depending on the model.
Alternatively, customers can opt for lease rates as low as 0.9 per cent for up to 48 months, depending on the model, or up to $6,000 cash back.
On top of those options, VW is offering up to an additional $1,500 in bonus cash.
Cash incentives are like a defibrillator jolt to even the most moribund of sales levels.

Those are pretty standard incentives for cars at this time of year. Chevy/GM have been offering the same, I know hyundai is as well. Trying to clear out last years stock for the 2016's
I just sold my car and was looking at similar options everywhere. I got an extra $3,200 off from manufacturer incentives. plus the 0% lease

Nope, almost all of these incentives were in place before the scandal broke. The only incentive that has changed is current diesel owners, or clients that had diesels on order, are getting the $1500. Everything else has stayed the same. In fact at first we were kinda disappointed that all that was offered was the $1500 bonus to diesel owners.
What is kinda hilarious is some people coming into our dealership, "Oh, it must be so tough right now... give me 50% off of a car and I'll help you out."
The reality. We had to write off 1 week of business in September, that's it. We had a banner October, and in fact had one of our single best weekends in the 12 years I've been at the store. 45 cars. Some people are coming in thinking that there is going to be these crazy deals, look at the product, love it, and buy it. We have had 0% for 84 mths on most models since May/June. Long before the scandal. $6000 cash is on Touareg and I believe CC, which is pretty much the standard rebate they put up every year on them since I can remember, to clear out the remaining previous year models.
It has been business as usual on the gas inventory, and for the city dealers like us, we are doing just fine. We have had worse Octobers when we could sell diesel models. However, the dealers that are getting hurt are small rural dealers which are 50%+ diesel sales.
If GM and Toyota can survive their "We hid stuff we knew was setting cars on fire and sending them careening over cliffs." scandals, I wasn't worried VW would survive this. Still doesn't make what they did right, but it isn't the worst thing a car manufacturer has done.

What can you pick a CC up for these days? I see them around (more infrequently than you would think given how cool they look) and wonder if I should have/could have ponied up more for that above what I paid for my Passat.

For sure - VW without a doubt will survive this. BP, Exxon, GM, Toyota and others have had worse events and have excelled afterwards. VW's image and brand has certainly been sullied, but with enough time and contrition - will be fine.

I think this is far worse than anything Toyota did. Toyota did not intentionally go out and code their systems to suddenly accelerate the car it was a "bad design" although ultimately no fault was actually found. GM did not survive they went bankrupt.
Having said that I don't think VW will go bankrupt or anything close to it.

Agreed. It should be easy for the 550,000 employees to find new work once it happens.

And then so should all the other manufacturers that get caught. This is far from over, and once the EPA is done re-testing everyone else's cars, 90% of the auto manufacturers that have been doing the same thing should as well.
And GM, Toyota, Ford, and every other manufacturer should be retroactively forced out of business to, for hiding defects that directly killed their customers. Heck, let's shut down the entire auto sector, and go back to horses and buggies. At least it will be impossible to boast about how many extra horses you have.

Yep. There is no denying that. And not one person in our building is making excuses for it. It happened. Nothing will change that. All we can do is keep on keeping on, and sell what we have on the merits of the product.

Not sure I'd be ready yet. I wouldn't be surprised if government agencies keep finding more models with these "issues" in the near term. Hopefully at some point all the skeletons will get (dragged?) out and things can get back to normal for them.

That's a bit of a bold statement, no? Because VW got caught cheating, all other carmakers are cheating?

Ya, I would put good money against that statement. Sounds like straight up BS

Good to hear, sounds like things are just fine for you all in the Calgary dealerships which is great considering how far removed you are from the actual wrongdoers. You guys don't deserve to pay for a rogue department in Wolfsburg.
Reminds me of some people at the local Arthur Andersen office here in Calgary that were outstanding folks, quite good at what they did locally. Some rogue employees in Houston did exceptionally bad things which that in that situation, cratered the firm. But everyone locally knew that they had nothing to do with that and they continued on with great success, albeit at a different firm.

I don't agree, there is always the stable.

The clear distinction is cheating via specific code versus not meeting emissions targets in real world driving. There is a big difference.
