Frolik is not a top line RW as you have in your lineup. Up front we need another two legit top 6 wingers but we're not as far away as it seems. That is the biggest hurdle but not insurmountable. The best thing is that Bennett looks to be clearly showing he could be a top line C in this league, given a few years. Those 3 and 4 line C spots could possibly be filled by Jankowski and Arnold, and one of the top 6 wingers Poirier. It is possible if they continue to develop.
With Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan, Brodie and Hamilton as the long term core, and some nice secondary pieces sprinkled through already, and some good prospect depth in most areas, I'm pretty optimistic.
As I've been saying the biggest problem right now and in the future is at the most important position. But we do have good prospects there.
|
I think Gaudreau and Monahan are the best fit, playmaker and shooter. The Flames are desperate for a young top 6 scorer to compliment Bennett. Bennett can create so much on the cycle, he needs a shooter on his wing. Was really hoping Poirier would be that guy but he seems a ways away, if he ever gets there. There doesn't seem to be much else in the system in terms of a blue chip offensive forward. Jankowski is still a big question mark and Klimchuk can't seem to stay healthy enough to develop properly.
Having a top 5 pick in 2016 and having the chance to draft a blue chip scorer might not be a bad thing for the long term.

Scoring Winger

I see it like it this
Gaudreau-Bennett-X
X-Monahan-Frolik
Bouma-Backlund-Colborne
Ferland-X-Jooris
Gio-Brodie
X-Hamilton
Russell-X
Gillies
Ortio/MacDonald
Many prospects could replace Jooris or Ferland or the 4th line C. The Flames definitely need a couple more top 6 wingers. Poirier or Klimchuk could become one of those wingers. I feel like Backlund would be a good bottom 6 C for a contending team.

so... how 'bout some trade speculation & rumours?

The Anaheim Ducks won their second game of the season on Wednesday, but GM Bob Murray is still looking to make some roster upgrades.
The name of Cam Fowler is out there, but the Ducks want to get a defenseman in return. Buffalo is looking for a blueliner and Fowler might be a good fit.
|
Seems strange. Young/proven dman being used as bait for a "shake up" on a team that can't score, yet they are wanting a dman in return... I realize it's eklund but.....

Vatanen and Lindholm help make Fowler somewhat expendable.
The ducks are probably looking for a more experienced defender.

So you're saying Smid for Fowler?
I would hate for the ducks to trade Fowler just because of how funny it is to have a guy named Fowler on a team called the ducks.

Don't forget they have Theodore coming up the ranks too.
I don't know if Fowler is what this team needs right now given our offensive capabilities from the blueline. However he has great skating, and him paired with Brodie would be salivation-worthy.

UFA top scoring wingers might be a way to go as well. Year to year varies but they'd be more likely available than a first line center or defenseman.

Acquiring Fowler would be insanely expensive and wouldn't really fill a need as we have more than enough offensive defenseman who are okay to bad in their own zone.
We could use a guy like Adrian Aucoin (what he was for us at the time). A smart, solid vet who plays within the limitations of his game. No idea who would be a modern comparable, both cost and talent wise.

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie: If he goes UFA, no doubt in my mind Byfuglien gets seven year deal in excess of $7 million per. #NHLJets

Big, slow guy, who will be on the wrong side of 30 when he becomes a free agent.
Hope it's not Calgary who gives him that deal..

Given their lack of scoring would say top six f needed.
The Boston scenario for Eriksson plus more plausible for another d. Have to be a big package.
Believe Murray looking to trade him to east so even if we were interested unlikely we would get him, and even more unlikely we would give up the assets needed to get him.

I don't see any chance of that happening. Vancouver I could see making a play like that. Chia also wants a big tough team and is horrible with cap management so wouldn't be surprised to see the Oilers front and centre

I don't think it's crazy that Calgary would be interested in Byfuglien. Treliving knows this team needs some size and physicality on the blue line.
I just hope he's smart enough not to overpay for it in free agency.

I'd give that money for Yandle but not for Buff.
