Interesting theory. I do remember Lucas saying how disappointed he was with the reaction to Jar Jar, and how he wanted him to be the first fully CG motion capture main character. A title that Gollum ended up getting due to the obvious difference in character quality.
I don't doubt that Lucas wanted Jar Jar to be a more major character, but if this was in fact his plan, he went WAYYYYY too far the one way to give any legitimacy to Jar Jar being anything but comic relief, if that.

I feel that as a lot of writers/directors/producers get older, they seem to get clouded with the idea that kids need goofy/cutesy/furry characters to relate to.
I don't know about you guys but as a kid, I always related and looked up to the more serious and cool characters and that's what serves as role models and inspirations for kids to aspire to and to play as. Kids played as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker...not Ewoks.
I don't know why so many creative people get bogged down with the absurd notion that you need to have a joke character for kids to like. That's the biggest flaw of George Lucas' logic in creating Jar Jar.

I was a weirdo who wanted to be an Ewok
Wicket W. Warrick is still my favourite character in the original trilogy. They were incredibly brave and noble creatures. And cute as all hell.
Look at that face!!

I hate Ewoks for this reason.
Yoda already set the record straight that the size of the warrior doesn't matter. The Ewok thing was cheesy to me.

The best thing about the Lego Star Wars droid tails is that they keep shooting Jar Jar into deep space.

If they made Jar Jar understandable without subtitles, I don't think the character is half as bad. That contrived accent is just repulsive. Same with Boss Nass

For whatever reason, Lucas thought he had a free pass on the whole racism thing in the prequel trilogy.
The bad jamaican accents on those two, Yatto, and the Asian sounding/looking trade federation guys, etc... were all cringe worthy.

Haha yeah that too. Although you could understand the trade fed guys a little better than the Gungans.

Anyone else hear a Star Trek communicator chirp between Maz saying "The Force..." and "...its calling to you"?

I watched Episode 6 last night and I still hate the Ewoks. I realize it was the 80's but the costume just looks so cheap. Their mouths don't even move when they talk and the blinking motion is so fake.
Luke is so legendary.

I don't totally hate the Ewoks but they are the reason Jedi is the weakest of the original trilogy. The movie would have been so much better if they were replaced by Wookies.

Hard to say what's reality and what's rumour, but Lucas apparently made some awful re-writes from ROTJ for the purpose of selling toys.
Changing the wookies to Ewokes.
Han was suppossed to die.
Luke was supposed to somberly walk off, spaghetti Western style. Instead we get a family BBQ.
The film was supposed to be called "Revenge of the Jedi" and be a lot darker.

I think the change from Wookiees to Ewoks was more about the logistics of finding a bunch of little people and children to fit into tiny bear suits rather than a bunch of 7'+ people to fit into Wookiee costumes.

That was Fords request, he went to Lucas and said that killing Han made sense and would create a sense of greater loss in the GFFA, he also didn't want to be known as Solo forever
That wasn't Lucas, I don't believe, that was another writer or David Lynch's idea ("I can't remember who) that Luke would walk off into the sunset all sad and dark and stuff.
Lucas put the ending in there that we saw because at that point he didn't want to do anymore sequels to Star Wars, the story as a whole was the rise and fall and redemption of Anakin, and when that all happened it was over, happy ending time.
That was extremely early in the script writes of the third movie, but George came to the realization that he had written the Jedi to not be creatures of revenge and changed it.
Frankly sitting there and going Lucas is crazy because of what could have been is a bit foolish, if you look at most early writes of awesome movies they would have been particularly bad scripts and bad concepts or had cringe worthy moments.
In the end, Lucas has to be slammed for Jar Jar in the Phantom Menace, the Ewoks in Jedi, and he should have really hired a dialogue writter instead of trying to write it himself
(Yeah I'm looking at you the whole I hate Sand conversation).

The toys. Lucas also wanted to sell toys. The toy sales are now the biggest piece of the pie:
http://www.statisticbrain.com/star-w...chise-revenue/
Toy sales from the new movie are expected to reach 5 billion in the first year alone:
http://www.avclub.com/article/disney...sales-a-224807
The Ewokes and other child like characters were all about the toys.
