It's not that he's a whipping boy but he's a guy that's deal expires as the end of the season and IMO at least would not be worth the raise he's going to expect in free agency. He's easy to move because of his contract status and if this team needs forward help he's the logical choice to be included in a big deal. If they can move Wideman then great but the chances of that happening with another year on his deal isn't nearly as good.

Dougie and Brandon say hi. Especially Dougie (which is too bad).

What if we swapped out either one to NJ and brought back Schlemko (currently playing about 14:00 a tonight, 1g 0a, +/- even) and a pick or something? Flames are clearly still rebuilding, Schlemko was steady for us last season, and should be affordable.

To be fair I don't really think that Bollig is a whipping boy. Nobody expects him to be very good at hockey. At least my problem isn't with Bollig, it's with Hartley who keeps playing him for 7 minutes a night when there are better options sitting in the press box.
The problem with Russell is that he's been playing way below expectations, just like Hamilton, and I think it's fair for the fans to be disappointed. They won't be whipping boys when they start turning it around. With Hamilton it seems the tide is already turning.

I think Hamilton is starting to understand the style that the Flames play more and more. As he improves his game he'll slide into the top 4 and I think that's when we'll see at least one of Russell or Wideman traded.
I still can't believe the crap people are talking about Hamilton lol, the kid is going to be a game changer for us.

Agreed. Some in here are right out of hand with the nonsense.

22 year old playing on a new team with new systems, in a new conference. You mean he didn't play like a #1 right off the bat!?!?! Colour me shocked.
He's a massive upgrade on our second pairing (And first pairing down the road) once he clicks. IMO Russell is the man out when that happens, especially when you have a few seemingly NHL ready guys in the AHL right now

No question about both Hamilton and Russell. I like Russell OK, but between him and Wideman, Russell is the easier skill set to replace.
And look at the Flames D a few years down the road:
Brodie, Hamilton, Andersson, Kylington, Wotherspoon, Kulak, Culkin, and maybe Gio is still around. Maybe Nakladl is a veteran spotting in sometimes.

It always seems to me that defensemen have a longer breaking in time when they go to new teams. I am not sure if there is any data to back that claim up or if it would be possible to prove, but that is the impression that I get from my years of watching hockey. To do their jobs well, they really need to learn how to react to the other players on their team.
I was always a little bit apprehensive about this trade. My limited viewing of Hamilton didn't give me the same feeling of hype that many others have. I would love to be wrong, but it does kind of make me want to read that thread from the trade where some poster called out people who didn't respond positively in the poll.
I am still on the fence with this deal.

Agreed. We are at the point were we need a spot or two to rotate the auditioning of new talent in our system. That is the main reason that I support moving our only 2 movable defensive assets. By the end of this season I would like to know which of Wotherspoon, Kulak, Nakladal, Morrison we should have in the NHL gathering experience, so when Smid and Englland move out a year later we have 2 young defensemen with one year seasoning before we bring up 2 more.
