Default Flames looking at KHL defenceman Nikita Zaitsev

per Friedman on HNIC

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=34773

Mentioned Flames, Flyers, LA, Canucks, Leafs and other teams are looking at him as his agent said he will be coming to NA next season

Should be noted he met with Shanahan in Toronto this past offseason

From a guy who watches a lot of KHL hockey:

Igor Eronko @IgorEronko
Nikita Zaitsev, 23, is one of the most promising Russian D's. Big right-handed shot, great skater, reads the game well, nice vision

He and Panarin were the two KHLers I was hoping the Flames would get last offseason. Zaitsev is really good. Basically as good as a D-man as Panarin is a forward.

High quality players. If the Flames could get him, that would be huge.

Any relation to Vassili Zaitsev? If so he would be able pick the corners pretty easily, one would imagine.

He would be fairly labelled a sniper.

Awesome movie if anyone doesn't get that reference. Enemy at the Gates.

As a 24 year old, Zaitsev can only sign a one year ELC next year if he wants to come to North America

I always imagine having fellow countryman on the team really helps with the recruiting in these situations, unfortunately the Flames are lacking in that regard.

Holy overate man, Zaitsev will get killed in the NHL, he's a skinny little softy who likely will never see NHL ice. I could name 10 AHL defenseman with a better chance of making the NHL over this little guy.

...you'd think by now we'd all be a bit more accepting of "undersized" players...

I also know like 10 guys in the KHL who would be better than Hamilton, but still, there he is, with his huge salary.
