The effort by the league to get it out of the game, IMO, has been piss poor. While they have rules against it, they are soft. If the league wanted it out, they could try to bring in rules like: fight and you are gone for the game, second fight and it is the game and next game, etc.

To put it a better way the NHL has a tacit acceptance of fighting.
I completely agree that the rules are not enough to deter, and laid out what I think should happen. This still allows for the fights between players bursting out of tensions, but maybe give each a 10 min regardless. I honestly don't really care either way, I enjoy hockey without fighting just as much, so if they decided to all-out ban it completely, black and white, I would be OK with that. But, as I said, The NHL has been trying to get fighting out for years, and the higher ups have said as much. Its the players/teams, fans and media (largely ex-players) that really pump it up, and the NHL needs the players/teams on board in order to make changes to the rules. This is why the point bothers me, the NHL, as an entity, does not allow or want fighting, but their employees do, so it's been a difficult change and they have adapted different rules to try and deter it in other ways (speeding up the game to make fighters obsolete).

I really think the biggest (and best) change the NHL could make to try and deter fights and dirty play in general is to not allow replacement of roster spots for suspended players. Combine that with suspensions for 2nd fights and forward, and fighting and cheap players will be all but gone.

It's not allowed, you (and most) are just willing to take the risk that a cop won't pull you over because there are bigger fish to fry. It doesn't mean you would have any room to complain if you pulled over for speeding.

The fighting thread has turned into a speeding thread? I just need it to derail into a housing bubble discussion and I'll have a CP Bingo.

Don't forget to work in an Edmonton jab.

But then again, that probably counts as the free space.

I'm pretty much just arguing semantics, more interesting than work haha.

Every time a fight breaks out the crowd roars, gets on their feet, the excitement level goes up 100 percent.

Yes, makes perfect sense you wouldn't want that in an entertainment product would you.

Fear not! The NHL instituted the shootout for edge of your seat entertainment purposes!

God I hate the shootout. And 3 on 3. Gimmicks.

Give me 5 on 5 hockey and let guys settle things on the ice when things get heated.

Fighting is awesome. It energizes the bench. It's black and blue hockey. True blue collar hockey. Olympics is like corporate white collar hockey. Sissy's and their high falutin dangles and passing.

As far as I'm concerned, if you ain't bleeding, you ain't tryin. Don't get me wrong, I don't want the NHL to turn into the ECHL, but I'm all for all forms of entertainment. ie: dangles, tic tac toe, knockouts

I always enjoyed a good hockey scrap but will admit that the evidence of head injuries has made me question their role. The Bob Probert evidence in particular really had an effect on me. He won so many more than he lost, yet his brain showed substantial adverse effects.

The trade off here is that this form of entertainment also contains an extreme factor of risk, and it is completely tangential to the outcome of the game.

Yeah. Who would ever want to watch this mundane brand of hockey.
