Grantland gets shut down by ESPN
http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/30/medi...and/index.html
Idiotic. Some great reading on this website. ESPN once again showing how shortsighted they are.

I never heard of it and I'm a big sports fan. Was that the problem?

While I liked some of the stories on Grantland it did seem like it must have cost a fortune to pay all the writers they had and they had a ton of overlap between writers that they didn't seem to need.
I would also say that some of my least favorite/uninteresting writers came from there and as a fan of Bill Simmons him constantly promoting them despite them sucking got very annoying.
I hope Simmons will focus more on his opinions and stuff that makes him good than trying to promote his buddies, but with a weekly Joe House podcast it looks like it may get even worse now that he has free reign.

Yeah. Bill Simmons talked about how ESPN wouldn't promote it. Word of mouth and Bill's podcast were pretty much the only way to find out about it.

It was very pop culture centric and the sports coverage that they had wasn't great.
But considering you are a music guy I thought you definitely would have heard of it. Based on reading some of your posts and your like of music that isn't mainstream I think you would have liked it/been the target audience for it.

Just got to spend several years working with a murderer’s row of great writers and editors. Tough to see it end but wouldn’t change a thing.

Can CP get together and hire DGB for our game takes and general witty banter?

Wait what? DGB is no more too? I thought it was just some solo dude. I have no idea what/who Grantland is/was.

Yeah, Barnwell might be the best NFL writer out there as far as analytics go.

Sounds like ESPN is going to honour the contracts of the remaining writers, and redirect them to "other ESPN platforms," which means that guys like DGB will be effectively neutered by Disney.

Well realistically how hard would it be for these guys to set up a site of their own now? They've already got an audience, so theoretically it seems like that hard work is done.

I'm wondering if they're killing it just because of its ties to Bill Simmons. They seem to have replaced it with http://fivethirtyeight.com/ on the ESPN website.

ESPN is in big trouble right now financially. They are cutting costs and laying off people wherever they can. They lost 3-4 millions subscribers last year alone with cord cutting and cord trimming, and with carriage fees around 7$, that is in the neighborhood of 300 million per year in lost income. The carriage fee racket is starting to burst and will see a lot of bloodshed among cable sports networks in the next couple years.
