Look, BIF, I never liked Hartley and in fact continue to believe the only reason he got the job was that he is Feaster's brother-in-law.
That said, he guided an expected bottom feeder to the playoffs, so, clearly, he has something going for him. You can't just say "he sucks" after 10 games - let's see how the season goes. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes...

No, it's about the same as 20+ other teams. There is no such thing as amazing coaching.
The Sabres' coach won a cup 6 years ago.Right now his team is 3-6-0.
The Leafs coach won a cup 7 years ago. Right now his team is 1-5-2
The Kings coach won two cups in the last five years. His team missed the playoffs last year and started the season on a losing streak.
The Ducks were arguably the best team in the NHL last year and are dead last in the NHL.
Todd McLellan won a president's trophy his first year with the Sharks IIRC. His team is 3-7-0
Randy Carlyle won a cup 8 years ago. Can't find a job. With his Burke ties, if we fire Hartley he's a possible candidate for the Flames job though.

No, it's amazing. Didn't you hear he won the Jack Adams? He's the best.

BIF, I know where you're coming from. For three effing full seasons the Flames refused a coaching change. Not one of those seasons resulted in a playoff berth.
Maybe Hartley should bust out the 5 dman powerplay, or kick some garbage cans. Could have used Stajan, Comeau, and Blair Jones in the shootout.

What's with the references to Brent? Why do you still care

Ha when I saw Frank as a latest post, I had to come to here to check if there was at least mention of a complaint about Brent Sutter.
Delivered as promised

Haha, why not? Its unfathomable that people want a bench boss canned already. Took the team the deepest its been in 10 years. I hope he coaches out his entire contract.

Figured I'd offer my 2c.
Remember last season how CP was very accurate in armchair GM/coaching? How we'd predict callups, demotions, even in-game coaching adjustments before they were officially announced. This year it seems a bit sluggish.
Berate the team for lack of effort. Finally starts to show. Scream for days to play Ortio. Finally does. Cruficy Ramo: placed on waivers. Criticizing his stretch pass system? They used it significantly less last night vs Ottawa.
So it gives me a bit of reassurance that Hartley still knows what he's doing and is working hard to help his team win games. But gosh, I wish the team would finish plugging its leaks faster than this. It gave me hope to see them battle back multiple times with Bennett at the spearhead. So at least their composure is greatly improved.
I think we'll see the team sputter back to life bit by bit and have them playing at a pace above .600 eventually, it's just a matter of when and how long they can keep up a good streak for.

Hartley is Feasters brother in law? I never knew that. #themoreyoukmow

Bob Hartley and the Coaching Staff Thread
Didn't want to make a new thread for this.
With many dissapointments so far in the playoffs, some coaches may be in the hot seat by next season if their team doesn't perform well.m again. Should Bob Hartley and Co. fail to fix any problems in the upcoming season, what coaches would you consider looking at? Right now these coaches seem like prime candidates:
- Alain Vigneault
- Darryl Sutter
- Ken Hitchcock
- Jack Capuano
- Guy Boucher
- Marc Crawford

I would be the happiest person on earth if Darryl Sutter was fired and then hired by the Flames.

Capuano isn't good. Crawford is a dinosaur. I'd love any of the other ones

i'd love for sutter to come back too and finish what he started in 2004, provided he sticks to coaching alone. no thanks to capuano and crawford. not sure yet on vigneault and boucher.

Certainly no to Capuano and Crawford. I don't know if Boucher would be an upgrade over Hartley. The other three may intrigue me.

Alain Vigneault - has shown the ability to take his teams to Cup Finals.
Darryl Sutter - Obviously an amazing coach
Would be my two choices.

I think if Sutter or AV become available, you have to fire Hartley (assuming they would want to come).

I can't see Vigneault getting let go. That team needs retooling on the ice not behind the bench.

Sutter's system wouldn't work for the Flames and the dressing room would go back to being miserable and we would likely see the kids become less and less motivated, IMO.
Hartley has done wonders with the up and comers also.
Crawford hasn't done anything relevant since '96 and doesn't really have a track record of success. He's been successful, yes. But not consistently.
AV has been handed some stacked teams and although he's made the cup finals a few times, I've never seen him really "out-coach" anyone.
The rest of the list, has never really done anything
I think Hitchcock is grossly over-rated and his playoff success with the Blues are a perfect example.
I don't see anyone being able to do a better job with what we have for a roster right now.
In a couple years, when the team has matured a bit, bringing in a coach to take this team to the next level is interesting, but what have any of these coaches done that is better than what Hartley has done.
You put anyone of those coaches behind the Flames bench right now and I don't think you see an increase of performance, more likely you see a drop for a year or so in team performance just so the players can get use to a new system.
Stay the course and in 2 years if the Flames aren't a contender, then you look at making a move.
But Hartley shouldn't be going anywhere for the next year at least. If the team falls flat on their face, then perhaps you bring in someone with a different coaching style.
But a change isn't necessary in year 3 of the rebuild. Year 4-5, perhaps. But don't bring in a "name" bring in a proven winner who won't disrupt the cohesion of the core.
