I don't think it's a lack of respect, but we have 11 bottom 6 guys and 3 top 3 guys on the team. Sure he's good defensively, but so are 70% of our forwards. At some point, we need to move out the defensive guys for some scoring help up front.

It was the NYI and they can happily have him for the low price of Okposo.

I would rather see Stajan moved first.

Stajan at least has some pull in the dressing room it seems. He's a vet who the team can depend on to move up or down the lineup and seems a lot more useful than Backlund. I'm willing to bet that Backlund has more value too.

Sounds nice to some but moving Stajan is going to be hard as hell to say the least. I think that Stajan's value on the trade market is probably pretty much absolute zero.
Also, given that guys like Lee Stempniak, Brad Boyes, and the now retired Curtis Glencross and other previously established good to decent NHL players have had to fight for PTOs this year, do you really think anyone would realistically want Stajan keeping in mind his current contract and the fact that he seems to be in decline? Think about those things for a bit.
I fear you're gonna have to wait until the offseason if you want any hope of seeing him and his $3.125M of his contract with 3 years left moved, and that's probably going to have to be as a buyout. Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with him...

I don't know why you'd want to buy out Stajan? He's a decent 3-4 line guy and seems to provide a calming effect to the team. His contract isn't great but it's not like it's terrible either, a buy out wouldn't really save too much either. I don't think there's much of a trade market for him but I don't think he makes the team any worse. I'd actually prefer to keep him over backlund because they offer much of the same sort of game and backlund has more trade value. If a team offered a 7th round pick for him, I don't think I'd take it but that's just me. I don't mind Stajan.

Stajan is overpaid but he doesn't hurt the team with his play as he's a very solid 4th line center. Backlund is kind of in no-man's land on this team as he's not good enough for top 6 and redundant as a bottom six player. I feel Granlund's better offensive skills would level off any defensive shortcomings compared to Backlund and you get that $3 million salary off the roster.
The fact of the matter is that you can't keep everyone in a salary cap league and there's going to be some pain when the Flames have to lock up guys like Gadreau, Monahan, etc and you are going to have to bring in entry level players to fill your bottom 6. Backlund is kind of lost in the shuffle here now he's at over $3 million and while he can handle the 4th line center role just as good as Stajan he's the guy that would be easier to move via trade.

I personally don't want to buyout Stajan and I don't mind him either. All I'm saying is that I think the only way to get rid of Stajan (if the team wants to) is via a buyout in the offseason. Well, that or maybe a trade for someone else's similarly bad or worse contract in return.

Stajan's presence combined with the young guys coming up convinces me we can trade Backlund and be in fine shape. Stajan can play that 3rd line role and a guy like Arnold can get his chance.
I get the impression Backlund does have some value around the league as he is only 26 and is an advanced stats darling. Flames need scoring and if Backlund can be part of the package that adds a legit 25+ goal guy then the Flames should do it

The reason Backlund has value is that he is worth keeping. LOL
He is the best 3rd line centre on this team.
Stajan should be moved/waived to make room for Arnold, Shore, whoever.
Jones too.
Getting rid of marginal vets is hard, and you might not get much if anything. But the infusion of youth by replacing them with AHL players ready to make the jump could be the shot in the arm of enthusiasm and youth I think this team needs, after all it worked well last year.

Eklund did say the Sens were interested in Wideman. Maybe he is right?

Backlund has more value than Stajan but Backlund isn't that much better than Stajan. We likely couldn't trade Stajan but keeping him wouldn't be the worst thing. I think Backlund is tradeable and losing him really wouldn't slow the team down.
A package of Backlund with Russell makes a ton of sense because we'd want a forward but we'd be giving whichever team an OK forward to replace who we'd get.

Ya lets trade our younger guy so an old veteran can take his place. Because we're not in a rebuild or anything...

I don't think people want to 'dump' him. The problem is Backlund is what he is, and thats a very average NHL player. Average NHL players wear out their welcome and are moved all the time.

Okay let's continue to spend $3+ million a year on our 3rd and 4th line centers because that makes perfect sense.
Stajan is a useful player but unmovable he can play either spot in our bottom 6. Backlund is also a useful player but has proven he can't stay healthy and also is not an offensive player. He is 26 and has not hit 20 goals or 40pts. He is a bottom 6 forward. We have several guys on the farm (Arnold and Granlund to name 2) that are knocking on the door to get in the lineup. If Backlund and say Russell could be packaged for a legit second line winger that can be a part of this team going forward it should be an easy decision to make.
You mention we are rebuilding so we would be trading a 26 year old and replacing him with a 22 year old. Sounds like something a rebuilding team would do right?

No.
The problem is the old veteran may not be tradeable mostly because of his contract. So we may have no choice but to trade, or at least explore trading the younger guy instead of the old vet because we can very possibly get something significant or even very good for that younger guy, as opposed to quite possibly nothing at all or next to nothing for the old vet because that old vet. Yes, I am saying that old vet may be unmoveable for better or worse.
