Hmm thinking about those three a trade, i wonder what you could get from it. Maybe even add Poirer? Or would that be too much.

They would probably rather have our 1st in that scenario

Anaheim is in the same boat with having too many d-men and can't score.
Columbus needs D but not sure they have any NHL forwards that they want to deal that aren't cap issues.
Boston may be a fit with them needing back end help, could a UFA swap of Loui Erikson for Kris Russell make sense. Also opens up a little more cap room for the Bruins.
Carolina would be interesting, wonder what it would take to pry Skinner out of there.
There just aren't a lot of teams looking to deal legitimate top 6 forwards.

Replying to this thread instead of multiple posts.
Re Wideman for Perron, believe that they would want Russell more than Wideman. Perron has had a slow start and is ufa at years end. I think Treliving is looking for a solution past this year and if Russell is dealt, it would be for a piece moving forward. Wideman won't be a penguin as they are cap strapped and can't see them being interested at the cap hit.
As for top 6 f being available, can't see us interested in Eriksson from Boston for the same reason as Perron. Pending ufa
Cam Atkinson - think we are trying to get bigger not smaller. Series against Anaheim showed size matters in west.
Skinner - we've beaten that dead horse.
Brayden Schenn is a player worth looking at. Did not receive an extension and he's pissed about his brother riding the pine. Believe he is available and can see GM BT being very interested. Playing w right now but is natural C. Isn't living up to the promise and might benefit from a change in scenery. Decent size and good for 20/20. Would love to see him at c on 2nd line.
Hextall would probably want us to take back an anchor contract and if it means taking his brother as a bottom pairing D why not. Only question is what Hextall would want in return. As long as it's not our first, Bennett Monahan or our top d, would be ok including a prospect like poirier or klimchuk to get the deal done.

Philly could use some help and have a lot of struggling players that may need fresh starts.
Jakub Voracek would be a nice fit. Don't know how much more with either D-man supposedly up for trade we would have to give to make it happen, but I would love to see a move like that.

If you add Bennett to one of the dmen, they may not just hang up right away.

$8m + reasons why that won't happen. Voracek not available.

Trade the high priced vets, bring up the young guys and focus on the 2016 draft.

What would a Schenn brothers package cost?
Russell and Backlund?
Flames would have 4 right shot D in that scenario and Brodie who would likely play right side with Gio.

People are going to be underwhelmed by the return on both players judging by some of the posts here. I think we'll be lucky to get a 2nd and a decent prospect (Wotherspoon or Arnold caliber) for either player. Maybe management wants to translate that value into a 2nd line forward, who knows? It kind of sounds like robbing Peter to pay Paul, for all the good it will do for our on ice fortunes for this season. Personally, I would be happy with picks/prospects in return.

If I was Philly, I wouldn't do that. They're giving up the best piece today and he has the most potential. They'd probably want Poirier or Klimchuk over Backlund, along with Russell.

Are you saying Klimchuk has more value than Backlund?

I think he would, to Philly at least. They're trying to shed salary, not pick more up. In a vacuum, Klimchuk and Backlund probably aren't far off in value from each other, but I just don't know why they'd want Backlund. They've got enough bottom 6 guys making millions as it is.

Schenns make 6.1m so we need to send salary there. We have a little bit of room but can't absorb that kind of cap hit.
Thinking Backlund going other way, but has to be extra salary going too. Probably an expiring deal so hextall can keep next year flexible as well.

Yeah if Backlund was expiring, he'd have a lot more value. As it is, he's a $3.5m 3rd liner with 3 years left. It's not a terrible contract but it's not a contract a team like Philly will want either.

Never quite understood the lack of respect for backlund?
While he is never going to be the scorer we hoped for, he is a solid defensive player. Hrudy was mentioning on the broadcast the other night how either the NYR or NYI scouts or coaches raved about how good backlund was...

Exactly, he's a solid defensive center that could easily be replaced by the likes of Arnold for a much cheaper price. Our bottom six shouldn't be tied up by players who make 2+ million and instead there are better options from our farm. That being said, I doubt a return for Backlund would be good.
