Default Stephen Harper International Airport?

I thought that I would start a thread here as there is some discussion elsewhere. Personally I (a) think its a little early to start naming things after the guy and (b) think there are more deserving people who should be ahead of him.

I didn't know we were looking around for someone to name the airport after, but I would think that either Ralph Klein or Peter Lougheed should be ahead of Harper.

I read that its a moot point because someone is usually dead for five years before they will name an airport after you, but maybe some interesting discussion to be had here?

I haven't heard of this. Are you saying the airport in question would be the Calgary airport?

History won't look too kindly on Harper's term as PM a few decades down the line I think. He's as divisive a politician as I've ever seen in Canada, not someone we should be naming stuff after

if they have to name something after Harper at the airport, I'd suggest the screening area.

Lougheed would be my first pick, but he already has a ton of stuff named after him.

Klein would be ok.

Like or dislike Harper, I agree that it's way to early to name stuff after him anyway.

Apparently there was a petition going around to do this.

I signed a petition to not.

What a ludicrous idea. Of all the people.

One of the longest serving PMs and he's from Calgary. Maybe when he's 90 they rename it after him and I'd have no problem with that.

Montreal named its airport after the single most divisive person in Canadian history, so precedent already exists.

That said, please, no. Leave YYC alone!

Totally agree. Harper's policies directly targeted one region of the country to the benefit of another; likely to be remembered as the worst economic policy in Canadian history and leading to his party being unelectable in that region for decades. And not to mention that Quebec separatist sentiment is at an all time high after Stephen Harper's term.

Oh no wait. That was Pierre Elliot Trudeau. They didn't name an airport after him did they?

I think any one of these fine facilities would be more appropriate to be named after Harper

Ha, this!
Would probably be staffed with temporary foreign workers (only the good ones though)

Garbage dump or sewage treatment would be ideal.

I'd rather it just stay 'Calgary International Airport.'

I mean, until someone comes along and does something unquestionably fantastic or something, whats wrong with leaving the airport named after our city?

Stephen Harper did some good things, and some bad things, like most PMs, but he never had that 'aura' that other PMs had.

Federal guidelines usually recommend waiting 5 years after a person has passed before naming something after them.

But then Manitoba named a bunch of lakes after servicemen recently killed in action and then also Jonathan Toews.
