Default Police officer uses force to remove girl from classroom in South Carolina

Watch the video. Was he in the wrong?

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2015...female-student

I guess she got into a fight with another student she was on her phone during class, teacher asked her to stop, she didn't and she refused to leave for disobeying the rules.

What should he have done if this is viewed as using excessive force for a teenage girl? Apparently he is being investigated by the FBI.

Are cops in the US in trouble because of all these videos showing up on YouTube every time they arrest someone? Are they avoiding certain situations because of what the Black Lives Matter movement has created?

Some believe that the BLM movement is giving reasons to youth and others to not fear or listen to the police and in fact defy the police.

I don't know if that is the case, but I found this interesting.

If this was a white girl and black cop would there be as much talk about it? I don't know. Is this a race thing?

I don't think he was in the wrong. The police are supposed to keep order. He removed her after she wouldn't obey the rules.

Seems a bit excessive to me, but the cop is in a very difficult situation.

Cop is clearly out of line here. He could've shot her in the leg.

Try using our words maybe? Call for another cop without rage issues? A two pound cop rag dolling an unarmed 80 pound girl head first into a wall is most definitely too much force.

I seriously doubt that the first thing he did was body slam the girl right when he walked in.

You're going to call TWO cops into get a girl out of a classroom?

"Dispatch, I need back up. There's a 90 lbs junior high girl here that won't leave her classroom. Might need tactical support"

Great use of police resources. Maybe he should've tried giving her some candy, forming a trust circle around her with her classmates and singing kumbaya to her instead?

Pick her up and carry her out of the class. If she fights back, make her stop.

She's fine. She's not hurt. Give me a break. He did nothing wrong.

Assuming (and perhaps it is a big assumption) the teacher and the cop tried to reason with her, what do you do? Is it ok to physically handle her in any manner? I think it was excessive, but I am not sure what force would be ok.

This is getting absurd. Are you going to try to gently lift her out of her desk? There's no way that would work. You have to yank her out in one quick motion, exactly like he did. Maybe next time she'll listen when she's asked to leave the room. She escalated the situation; not him.

For this specific case I think I'd like more information before I decide. It definitely looks bad, but if she's clinging to her desk, I don't know how you get her off it. Could probably pry her out easier. Wasn't like she was striking back or anything.

However, I don't agree with the tone of the OP. It makes it sound like the real problem/culprits in these incidents are the people taking videos of police officers using too much force and shooting unarmed people and the Black Lives Matter movement. Both of these are very important things and the police, especially in the US could probably stand with having a bit more light shed on their practices and behaviours. Before this, it was excessive use of tazing. Now people are just getting shot. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, and being thrown to the ground fits in line with this?

Dude, the first thing I said was I will reserve judgement on this specific case until more information comes out. Then presented arguments for both sides for that case.

Yeesh.

How do you escalate a situation by sitting in a chair? She's in a chair, in a classroom, being pouty. You don't assault a child for pouting, even if they refuse to respect your authority over the chair.

The kid will probably quit school, and spend the rest of her life either hating or in fear of the police. I guess some people think that's a good outcome. At least there won't be a "next time".

I knew I shouldn't open this thread. I knew people would be defending this idiot.

I'm sorry but that is just the most brain dead thing I've ever heard. There is never ever going to be any justifiable reason for a grown man to body slam an unarmed 16 year old girl. It's absolute dumb luck that the kid wasn't injured. 25 kids have been injured seriously or killed by cops since they started patrolling schools in the early 2000's. Obviously the right thing to do is call a cop with better coping skills. Or just keep operating on the solid logic that 16 year olds bounce when you slam them. Try body slamming your own kid when they don't listen and see how long you remain a parent.

She escalated the situation by defying the teacher, then the VP, then the police officer. All she had to do was leave the classroom.

It's not like he kicked the crap out of her. He was brought to the classroom because she wouldn't get out of her chair. His only job was getting her out of the chair. She wasn't complying with verbal commands. That literally leaves one other option - physically removing her. That's what he did. She wasn't hurt. Where's the problem?

You miss the part where the grown man is a police officer. I don't care your age or sex, if you aren't compliant to direct orders from police, you are going to have a bad day.

You don't think there would have been verbal requests for her to leave the room, before the video starts? This situation is entirely the girls fault.

Oh my God are you serious?

You're acting like he did his best Hulk Hogan impression, lifted her over his head and body slammed the #### out of her, WWE style.

He tried to pick her up out of the chair, she struggled and refused and the seat fell over. He then picked her up and carried her away from the desk and dropped her like literally, 6 inches off the ground and looks like he dropped her on her butt too. No injuries reported.

Wtf do you expect when you refuse to listen to police? Pretty much every altercation with an officer results in the person being tossed to the ground. Just cause this happened to a black teenaged girl it's an ordeal?
