Did Calgary get Dougie Thanks to Freddie?
SN article today made mention that a big part of why Dougie was on the move was Dougies insistence that the Bruins acquire the rights to Freddie.
Not a large article on it, so not much else to say (and not going to copy the entire thing here) on it.
But what do you think? Is this just SN fishing for bait? Does us acquiring Freddie lend any credibility to this?
What is Freddie actually bring to this team on his own? I haven't heard anything about his play this year, so it's tough to think that Treliving wanted him on his own and he just happened to be Dougie's brother.
Tough to believe this kind in Inquirer chatter, but it is food-for-thought none the less.
Here's the article it was mentioned in:

Damien Cox is brutal. I remember he created and debunked a rumor on the headlines segment of HNIC regarding Burke's future in Calgary.
All we need is more speculation piling on Dougie

Well he is tied for the team lead in goals right now, so he isn't entirely useless.

Hes got a couple goals so far for Stockton. By all accounts he's having a better start than Dougie.

Freddie has 3 goals in 4 games with Stockton and is currently tied with Derek Grant for the team lead in goals.
Grant and Hamilton each have 3 goals and the rest of the team has a total of 4.

Does the deal to acquire Dougie look any better or worse with a 7th rounder thrown in? If not, then who cares.
At the end of the day I do not doubt that high profile players can have an influence on management in regards to these decisions. We saw it with the fourth Staal brother in Carolina and even with Robyn's brother here in Calgary before and I am sure many other instances in the past. But it really doesn't matter, acquiring Freddie may have appeased Dougie but it definitely didn't hurt the Flames, if anything it helped them secure a great defensemen and also a strong AHL contributor at the same time. Win win?

So what if he did (insist)?
Flames get a franchise D and had to give a minor league job to his talented brother? Who doesn't make that deal? Even for the picks they gave up.
That being said, I sincerely doubt he made those demands.

Oh jeeze. I had looked the other day and didn't see him near the top at all. Not entirely useless is right!

As for the rumour. Calgary got Freddie for a 7th rounder so basically nothing. He has had 3 decent years in the AHL and 17 games in the NHL last year. This year he has 3 goals in 4 games so he seems at worst to be a valuable AHL player who has some potential to maybe turn into a NHLer. I think if you take a look at the average 7th rounder he has already surpassed what a vast majority of them would ever do.
Now considering the brother angle since Freddie is almost 100% assured to spend the year in Stockton what does Dougie gain by having his brother in the organization? He won't see him at all since they live in different cities and play on different teams. It doesn't seem like Freddie was in danger of not getting a contract and this is a way to help keep his career going.
In the end there appears to be very little substance or reason for this to be true and would seem to be a very flimsy reason to trade a guy that you offered 5.25 million a year to.

It's what I was thinking as well. Is this too convenient of a story not to write? Or is the evidence that the story is true in the Freddie trade?
While WE see Freddie as a 100% lock for Stockton, I doubt Dougie and Freddie feel that way. The dream is likely for them to play together with the Flames.
The issue is that the trade is still a mystery. Anything that has legs seems worth reading.

Half of the members on this site would probably trade Dougie for Freddie right now

So, we have Freddie to thank for trading quality draft picks for Bouwmeester 2.0?
Curse you, Freddie!

Not sure about this story but if we had kept Rob Niedermeyer then Scott would've come to Calgary instead of Anaheim and we might've won the cup in 2007 instead of losing in the first round!

I think that the Flames are playing the long game... perfectly:
1) Trade for Dougie
2) Sign him long term
3) Use this as leverage to get Freddie and his club interested in trading with Calgary
4) Acquire Freddie, who has a higher ceiling than Dougie in 4 years
5) Sign Freddie for 8 years reasonably
6) Have 4 years of all-star Freddie
7) Green

Cox got the rumour wrong. My sources tell me the whole reason why Treliving traded for Dougie was just so he could entice Freddie to sign with Stockton.

Freddie had some decent time in the AHL, but in his several shots at the big team in SJ, he NEVER looked like he belonged. But who knows...
