I've got that feeling going into this game that we need a miracle to pull out a win. Can't remember that feeling since 2013-2014.

Couldn't disagree more - this team has been doing the right things for a few games, and that usually portends winning. Just like when a team is on a winning streak, but is starting to get complacent.

Last year during the 8 game losing streak, the last few games of it the Flames were doing the right things and playing well but still losing. That's what this feels like to me.

Happy Ortio is finally starting. Wish they would insert Nakladal and sit any one of those d-guys - what happened to "always earned, never given"? If Nackladal earned a call-up, then he earned a shot. Any one of Wideman-Hamilton-Engelland could sit one out. Could be the refresher that's needed - "geez, if they'll sit one of those guys....."

Wideman eats up so many minutes. You would swap a rookie for your top minute man? Risky business. I wouldn't do that.

Engelland hasn't been as bad as many on here think. Also been given more and more minutes as the year progressed.

I wouldn't be opposed to having Dougie sit a game though. Watching can be a part of learning and developing. Johnny never looked back after being sat in the pressbox. The young fella might just need to hit the reset button after signing the big money deal.

They looked good for half the game last night and looked good all game against the Wings, but there still hasn't been a game where the Flames looked like the better team or the team in control.

What signs are you seeing?

They were the better team all game against the Wings I thought, especially 5v5.

Even last night against the Rangers I thought they were the better team in the 1st and the 2nd, were unlucky to get out of the second down by 1 IMO, and then the early goal in the 3rd just cratered their confidence.

The last 2 games look nothing like the first 6 IMO, much better play overall.

Far more aggressive on the forecheck the past few games. Transitioning quickly also, like a hybrid of the stretch pass breakout and a more traditional chip in system.

PP looks a lot better even though they have nothing to show for it. Similarly the PK looks great even though it's gotten scored on. They're skating a lot better, making better passes. Most importantly, they seem to be playing with emotion and intensity again. Backcheck and forecheck both look night and day better than the first 5 or 6 games, particularly the forecheck. Few players (Frolik, Bennett, Jooris, Backlund, Monahan) have had a number of quality chances but puck has been rolling, or goalie made a great save, or barely missed the net. Team pushes and pushes with momentum, and then the one defensive gaffe is in the back of their net. Goaltending has been deflating momentum when the team looks like they're going to score.

Just IMO of course, that typically at the end of a losing streak the team starts playing better but is still losing. Ditto as a sign that a winning streak could be ending, the team starts playing less well but is still winning.

For me the real x-factor right now is goaltending. If Ortio can provide some stability, I actually think the Flames are poised for a winning streak.

Not to mention, looking good against the NYR doesn't mean a thing. They are not a strong corsi team. You can spend all day in their zone and accomplish nothing. How many legit scoring chances did we actually have, less than 10? Lots of high and wide.

Still all the same problems that have been there since day 1. Soft goaltending, check. Inept offense, check. Inept PP, check. Bad defensive coverage, check.

I wonder if they waive Ortio if he doesn't perform today. Hiller doesn't need a backup.
