Hartley is playing Bennett as the 4th line LW - so that Grant can play centre?
Always fun watching a young offensive player getting misused. I'm sure he'll enjoy his 7 minutes of ice time.
Coach Bob continues to be one of the team's biggest under-performers this season.
Give me a break. These lines are not set in stone. I bet he gets more than 7 minutes of ice time tonight. Well, he does need to earn his ice time, so maybe he hasn't been performing to what the coach wants. Always earned, never given.

These are just opening face-off line mates. Hartley switches up lines durring the game all the time. If Bennett plays well to start the game he won't be playing 4th line , 7 minutes of action.
Bennett has not been seting the ice on fire with his play. He will get going put i have no problem with what Bob is doing with him to start this game. Posters were saying the same thing with Sven, and when Johnny hockey sat in pressbox last year.
You're right, Sam Bennett with his one assist, zero goals, and three shots in six games has proven to the coach the he deserves more ice time.
The point isn't whether he deserves ice time. It's about what's best for his development. If he's not getting ice time he needs to be sent back to Kingston.

It's one game, that has not even started, and the send back to Kingston if not getting top 6 minutes has come up?

He's also played a strong game. His effort is consistent. He's not being outplayed by guys like Backlund, and Bennett's personal development is a huge piece to our long term success.
Hartley playing Ramo and Hiller, ignoring Ortio and pushing Bennett down the line-up for no reason is annoying me as a fan who wants to see long-term thinking.
I don't hate Hartley, but some of his line-up choices this year have been annoyingly short sighted.

It has to. 15+ minutes a game was Burke's condition for keeping Monahan up at the same age and it should be the same for Bennett especially as Bennett has MORE upside than Sean. Sam played 10:20 last game, that's Brandon Bollig minutes. If this persists for 3-4 more games it should absolutely be a consideration to send him down.

Since his ELC is ticking, and Bennett can't be sent to the AHL because of the NHL-CHL agreement, things will need to be worked out with Bennett in Calgary this season. I'm sure the coaches and organization are cognizant of that and will be working really hard with Bennett to keep him headed in the right direction.

God, THIS is what is annoying and shortsighted.
With the way some of you guys talk, I will be forgiven for thinking that you have actually coached an NHL game before. Take a look at practically any other team board where rookies are struggling, and you will see the same complaints about coaches mismanaging young players. Contrary to popular belief, it is abundantly common for teenage rookies with only a handful of games to their credit to get heavy sheltering during games, and believe it or not, huge swaths of these developing players are not ruined by such treatment. If this is the standard procedure in the NHL, one would have to think that maybe the collective majority of the best hockey coaches in the world have a good handle on what really is best for young players.
This is not "long term thinking" on your part. This is impatience of a fan who is frustrated by the fact that as good a player as Bennett is, he is clearly not ready yet to play a bigger role. Get used to it. Because it could take another year.

Playing Ramo and Hiller over and over and over, despite terrible performances, and ignoring the 3rd goalie (who is younger, and promising), is short sighted and poor coaching.
Bennett has struggled? He's struggled to put up points (everyone not on the first line has struggled to do that, except Jones), but his 200 foot game has been strong.
I feel Hartley has had a poor start to the year, Bennett's role being part of that.

Listen to the Brad Treliving interview about how the goalie situation was being handled. A very young player like Ortio has been sheltered just the same as has Bennett. This was not "ignoring" Ortio. This was protecting him from a toxic on-ice situation where there were real concerns about how that would affect him in his first year with the NHL club.

I thought that his last two games were not as good as his first several games. Bennett is NOT a seasoned NHL veteran, so yes, Hartley and any other coach at this level will handle him differently than his other forwards who have had slow scoring starts.

I always considered it Hartley's job to win the current hockey game. If he thinks Hiller gives him a better chance to win over Ortio, he should play Hiller. If he thinks he has the best chance to win with Bennett playing 9 minutes, he should play Bennett for 9 minutes.
If these decisions are detrimental to player development then it's the GMs job to make adjustments to the lineup.

IMO, Bennet should be getting the Gaudreau treatment and spend a game watching from above. Just to get him to see he probably has a bit more time than he thinks he has when he's on the ice.

I would agree with this. Hartley had the luxury at this point last season of making such decisions given the strong start that the Flames had. This year, I wonder if he is more hesitant to give Bennett a night off simply because he does believe he can be a difference maker right now.

Sounds like we will get to face the backup tonight, that would be great.
