That's interesting. Putting Backlund and Berglund together on the same NHL team has interested both fan bases at times over the years.

Columbus hiring Tortorella is odd to me because I've always thought fairly highly of Davidson who runs their Hockey Operations over there. I'm just not sure he's a good fit there (or any where in the NHL for that matter). Too confrontational and unwilling (it seems) to adapt.

With the Blues having so many injuries at F... Perhap moving one of their D for Johannsen makes sense???
What would CBJ have to include to get Pietrangelo??
I know, it's extremely unlikely...but hypothetically, maybe young D, Ryan Murray??

Meh...maybe...I do hold him in very high esteem ...he's a legit #1 D, no question in my mind
I didn't say STL doesn't need to add...I do think they would, but it'd be a lesser prospect or player compared to Murray, in my opinion

I think Davidson sees their problems as endemic attitude issues. Wanted a strong leader to reel in Johansen and whoever else. Tortorella hiring was a message more than a means to an end

Summary:
league executives believe Stamkos will test free agency if he isn't signed by the trade deadline (Feb 29)
Lightning are trying to move Matt Carle ($5.5 mil cap hit through 2017/18) to free up money
BJs are desperate for a top 4 d-man but so many other teams are looking for d-man too
Jackets have some interest in Leafs Polak
Treliving doesn't have a specific deal in mind but has told teams he wants to shake up his roster.
Jim Rutherford is on the hot seat and the Pens may replace him with Bill Guerin
Ducks may replace Boudreau with Paul MacLean (who is already on the coaching staff)
Ducks have made Clayton Stoner available but return won't be a lot
Bruins are also desperate for a d-man
Would like to move pending UFA Loui Eriksson and have tried to move him several times during the off season
A playoff contender will take Chris Kelly off their hands
Canes are working the phones and are expected to move Cam Ward.
Coyotes are looking for a d-man as Maloney doesn't like the current mix on his blueline.

Wideman for Eriksson straight up??
Gaudreau/Monahan/Eriksson could be a good line - Eriksson has looked good to so far this season 7 pts/ 7 gms

I honestly cannot believe Cam Ward is still goaltending for Carolina.

I would gladly do that deal from a Flames perspective. Gets Calgary a decent top 6 RW and clears that $5.25M Wideman is owed next year. Could mean Russell gets re-signed and fills a need for the Flames. Also allows Brodie to slide to the right side and not be forced to play a right shot on the left side

Wideman was booed out of Boston last go around. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I'd be surprised. He's one of those guys who you just have to accept his warts when you consider everything he brings overall.

Actually, you have it the wrong way around. Brodie is a left shot. But he prefers playing on the right side, probably because it means playing with Gio.

Yeah i would do that deal in a second if it meant Boston taking Wideman full contract with no retained $. I can't see Wideman waiving to go to Boston. They are months away from tearing that roster down.

Should Treliving take a run at Ward with an eye to signing him to a 3 year (at longest) deal while we wait and see how Ortio and Gillies come along?

I could see Treliving thinking about signing Ward on July 1st if he does not think Ortio is a true starter. It will also depend on who is available on the trade market and cost going into the summer. This last summer the cost seemed pretty high for young goaltenders. Granted would have been nice if the flames could have snagged Jones.

Ward is worse than Ramo and Hiller.

I wouldnt say that. Ward plays on a pretty crappy team so he is hard to evaluate. No way is he worse than Ramo. You might be able to convince me that he is the same as Hiller. If he is the same as Hiller (1b goalie), then flames should look eleswhere for a true starter.

Good goaltenders elevate their game to carry "pretty crappy teams" with Faulk, Sekera, Jeff Skinner, Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, Elias Lindholm, etc.

2012 Lockout-to-Now Stats
Player / GP / Save Percentage / Low Danger / Medium Danger / High Danger
Ward / 105 / .906 / .964 / .919 / .796
Ramo / 84 / .910 / .967 / .918 / .819
Hiller / 153 / .913 / .965 / .919 / .832
Bobrovsky / 159 / .919 /.967 / .923 / .832
Varlamov / 167 /.918 / .970 / .936 / .830
Ward is worse than Ramo, but that doesn't mean Ramo's very good. Right now Ward's arguably the reason the Hurricanes are a "pretty crappy team". I added Bobrovsky and Varlamov as examples of good (better-than-Hiller) goaltenders on a "bad" team.
Ward got hot in the playoffs ( in a tandem) 10 seasons ago. He's made the playoffs exactly once since then.

Of those players you listed , other than Faulk , can you honestly say that any of them are 1st line /1st pairing players? Eric Stall is turning into a 2nd line center. Jordan is like Backlund (2b/3a center). Skinner with his head injuries is a 2nd line player. Lindholm is going to be great, but he's not there yet.
As for there D, after Faulk they have Hainsey, Wisneski, John Liles to name a few. I like Hanifin but he's pretty young and will take some time.
Yes good goaltenders cover warts, but the hurricanes have a hell of a lot of warts. I will say you have convinced me that he is no better than a 1b goalie. He is still better than Ramo.

No i don't have it wrong but I guess I poorly explained myself. once Brodie returns the Flames would have 4 right side defensemen. I guess Engellend sees the press box. Brodie, Wideman, Hamilton that is a lot of money on the right side and means either Hamilton or Wideman are $5M+ player on the third pair
