Hopefully the Government gives the job to Mike Holmes so that they can make a TV show out of it. With some big sponsorship money they could probably keep the cost down a bit.

If I'm not mistaken I believe even the Canadian Taxpayers Federation - Aaron Wudrick - says this is needed.

Yes. Stupid thing to even argue about. Fix it up, but it doesn't need to be a palace. Ottawa is not Paris. Stephen Maher added,

It's the people's house. Renovate 24 Sussex and be done with it.

Aaron Wudrick ‏@awudrick 13h13 hours ago
@stphnmaher even us skinflints at the CTF agree on this. AG outlined this all in 2008. Clearly some fixing up is needed.

Aaron Wudrick ‏@awudrick 13h13 hours ago
@stphnmaher provided they make public what's being done, and the pricetag, I don't see a problem here. It's a house. Doesn't last forever.

24 Sussex Dr. is about the only house that didn't take advantage of the home renovation tax credit. #cdnpoli

Hold on. So Harper finds out in a 2008 AG report that 24 Sussex Dr needs renovations. He introduces a home renovation tax credit in 2009. Then doesn't take advantage of the tax credit he just introduced would would directly benefit him?

Hilarious.

(Keep in mind it's all government money, if the tax break is used or not. Either the federal government credits the federal government back for renovating a home owned by the federal government, or the federal government just outright pays for the renovation, which would like be more cost effective as there's less red-tape and paperwork.)

Well we have a serious problem if our government leaders aren't living in proper housing.

So it looks like Trudeau will be inviting the leaders of the opposition to the climate change conference next month. Nice display of cooperation that's been missing for the last couple of decades.

Between this and inviting the premiers it's also a good way to cover his back. Smart move whether for altruistic or political reasons

Is it just me or does an infill seem more sensible with a budget like that?

A 10,000 sqft house of that quality couldn't be much more than $5M to build from scratch. (excluding the property).

It's probably a damn heritage site.

If your worried about the cost, just remember Stephen Harper spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars of tax dollars advertising to you how awesome they were. If the old homestead needs some work, so be it.

Also heard a funny joke, Justin is going to be having sex in the same room he was conceived in.

I also have this image in my head of him rolling into 24 Sussex, flopping down on the couch, kicking his feet up sand saying "ah, it's good to be home!" and sparking a joint. If I were a cartoonist, I'd totally make that happen.

Looks like the Harper regime is still in charge of the Conservative Party

Quote:
In a sign of increasingly heavy-handed attempts to quell internal Conservative-party unrest following the defeat of Stephen Harper’s government, the party is planning a post-election caucus meeting to which defeated candidates would not be invited.

This is a highly unusual step for any party to take. As a rule, both newly elected and returning MPs, and incumbent MPs who ran but were defeated, are invited to the first meeting after caucus. Defeated MPs still have flight privileges for a short time after an election, so they can return to Ottawa to clean out their offices. As a result, they are usually able to come back for one final caucus meeting with their former colleagues.

Those meetings can sometimes get hot for a leader, and a party apparatus, who failed to secure re-election. Defeated MPs have just spent months knocking on doors, and become conduits for the anger they heard from voters. It is apparently for that reason that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s allies in the party leadership, including party president John Walsh and Harper’s chief of staff, Ray Novak, are not inviting defeated candidates for the first post-election caucus meeting, apparently in mid-November: They want to contain a rising tide of anger against Harper and his campaign.
Quote:
“Whoever is making this decision doesn’t understand team,” the senior member of the Conservative caucus said, on condition of anonymity. They may not even understand tactics: Embittered former MPs, deprived of a chance to vent, may take their anger to local newspapers, as some have already done since the election.

Senior Conservative sources said there is already growing concern that either Harper, or people who were close to him while he was Prime Minister, are seeking to organize his succession. Some members of the party’s national council are calling for a leadership election as early as May 2016, which would give an advantage to members who are already well-organized. The member who most closely fits that description is Jason Kenney.

The renovations to 24 Sussex have been needed since Trudeau was in office the first time. Nobody wanted to spend the money necessary to fix the place up though.

It is understandable that it is needed to be done.

It's classification should be changed to allow a new iconic structure to replace it. There is absolutely nothing special about 24 Sussex except the address. It's a long Canadian tradition that these kinds of renos triple or quadruple. If it's budgeted at $10M it will inevitably rise to $25M minimum. Asbestos, 50 year old electrical, no central AC, on it goes. I looked at the floor plan of the main floor and it's far from functional for a modern home let alone a Head of State. Ya they will move walls and stuff but this kind of retrofit for such a poorly maintained and old building envelope is just good money after bad. They should hold a national competition and build something we can all be proud of. Trudeau can move into Stornoway and whoever replaces Harper can bunk at a Motel 6 somewhere. My .02.

Isn't Jason Kenney the one that said they should re-open the abortion debate a couple years ago or something and Harper had to step in?

If that's the case and he's the one they're lining up for four years... yeah, and it'll be worse than this time.

I wonder if the right could become fractured once again.

Yeah, I'm surprised Kenney is the front runner to lead the party. He was one of the big names for the Alliance and in the inner circle but lost the cabinet posting when Harper became PM. Rumour was he was a little too conservative for even their image (plus I think Harper wanted to reward some Quebec and eastern MP's to balance things more).

Kenney winning would be a step backwards, would it not?

Also, I'm surprised about the gay rumours. I thought he was big time anti-gay? One of those right wing religious nuts? Course, I guess a politician who is against gay rights actually being gay is hardly something we haven't run into before.
