Van is slack pretty much all the time. You can walk down the street smoking a joint and nobody bats an eye. Cops may or may not tell you to put it out or toss it but as long as you're not rude or disrespectful, nobody cares.

And if legalized I don't think you should be able to do that.

Why? I think it's pretty damn stupid that we have open liquor laws, too.

Although Calgary actually has a lower rate of marijuana charges per 100k people than Vancouver.

I do know someone is Vancouver not that long who was outside a bar in the middle of the day and asked a big biker-looking guy if he had a rollie. The biker guy said yeah, why do you have some weed? My friend said yeah, and then the guy laughed and said; "Today is not your lucky day". He then pulled out a radio and within seconds there were uniformed police busting him. When they found that all he had was a gram on him, they were mad and just threw it into the storm sewer and let him go. The small amount obviously wasn't worth the paper work, but they were definitely actively trying to bust people.

Here's a question - what will be the next thing that gets people behind it to legalize once this is done?

Prostitution. Because Trudeau wants brothels on every street corner.

Personally, I think we should follow the Portugal model and decriminalize all drugs.

indeed, punishing the addicts helps no one. Treat the addicts and go after the dealers.

Crystal meth I hope. I feel like it's just misunderstood. Legalize so we can educate and treat people properly.
Why does there need to be another thing to legalize?
I don't think anyone will be clamouring to legalize anything else. It took this long to almost legalize a harmless non hallucinogenic drug..

How about our stupid open alcohol laws. Pretty much any country on earth you can have a drink where you feel like it. For some reason in Canada you can't.

I think a an entire wholesale change on the war on drugs will be next. A mass step to focus on harm reduction over imprisonment.
Not sure if the decriminalize and go after dealers will work or if full on legalization of harder drugs makes more sense. I lean toward full legalization because it won't increase use of the worst drugs as the legality of crack or herion isn't why you don't do it.

Because I think the Alcohol & Pot laws should mirror each other.
The discussion about smoking pot or drinking beer while walking down the street is a different (yet valid) discussion, IMO.

Honestly, this is why I feel like full legalization actually makes the most sense. I know it's not a popular opinion, but from a public health perspective you'll have less people overdosing due to harmful cutting agents and additives. You'd be able to do better research on the long-term health effects, and probably be able to devise better strategies for treating addiction. It would be harder for kids to get their hands on it, and it would break the backbone of organized crime.
Legalize it, don't sell it in the same stores as alcohol, don't allow sales after certain times (say 8 PM), don't allow it to be marketed at all, and enact severe punishments for anyone caught dealing illegally or to minors.

Think of the Children!
On the one hand I totally agree that it's annoying to not be able to have a beer at the lake or something like that but have you ever walked down the strip in Vegas at night while sober? It's the worst.

That's the thing though, it's on the strip where it's to be completely expected. It's not like people are wandering every street of Las Vegas getting wasted & partying.

That's because it's still illegal to drink in public in Vegas, it's just not enforced on the strip

Yeah, exactly. It's to be expected in the bar districts and I don't think that's really a big deal. I'm just one of those people that thinks if I'm going to have a beverage that's bad for me, I'd rather drink a cider or a beer than a Coke. It's not like a cider is any worse for me than Coke, yet I'm allowed to drink Coke anywhere I want.
