I'm going to go ahead and say that the coach and GM disagree with you. It may be your opinion that the Engelland signing is terrible but myself, others and obviously the coach and GM would venture to say that it's not bad at all.

Don't know if this has been stated in here but I hope Ramo isn't taking Gilles playing time now. Gilles needs to play the bulk of the games. Gilles is our future #1 I am sure he'll pass Ortio on the depth chart very soon.

I don't think you have to worry about that. The Flames won't interfere with Gillies' development for a guy who won't be part of the organization in a few months. Ramo will probably just get the starts that Kent Simpson would have got (e.g. back-to-back games) and get called up as backup if one of Hiller and Ortio is injured.

Glad he cleared. Would have been terrible if Ramo was picked-off for free, and suddenly Hiller got injured.
Hopefully Ramo finds his game down there as well. You never know.

Seriously? Having his 3.8 mil off the books gives them more flexibility. You don't pay a goalie that much money to be injury insurance. It's not the worst thing that he's going to Stockton, but I'm willing to bet Treliving was praying he would get claimed.

it was probably a win/win situation. They surely would have been fine with him getting claimed because it would have cleared a big chunk of salary cap, but I don't think they are particularly sad or pissed over keeping him in the organization either. It's good insurance to have in case of injury, and like C4L says, maybe he finds his game again down there. Also who knows, maybe they can somehow flip Hiller for a pick at the deadline and then recall Ramo as Ortios backup for the last few weeks.

ramo will presumably be assigned to ahl. If so, will continue to count for $2.85m against cap, $950,000 relief.

Brad screwed up on this one. Thankfully, it is only 1 year. He's an inexperienced GM, so hopefully he learns from this. 3-headed goalie monster never works.

Wonder if Ramo will ultimately be assigned to a club in Europe.
If he stays with the AHL club, have to think he would play very few games....

If that's his biggest screw up we are truly blessed.

Every GM makes mistakes, even the best ones. This is basically nothing in the grand scheme of things unless you're that concerned about the owners being out $3m.

He meant it would be off the books if a team claimed him.

Love or hate the Raymond and Engelland signings, the one justification I can't stand is that they were needed to get to the cap floor. Signing 3 year contracts to get to the cap floor is a terrible idea.

Why? Below average starter with a high salary.
Pretty much everyone clears waivers. I don't know why anyone would be surprised.

Sure, you don't pay a guy that much money to be injury insurance, but what exactly is the cap implications right now that you need to be worried about?
I would agree with you if Calgary was near the cap, and/or if Ramo had more than 1 year of term.
Obviously Ramo wasn't signed to be an insurance policy. It has been beaten to death it seems that the Flames were wanting to move Hiller, but that didn't happen. Now you have a 3.8 injury insurance contract for a year. Ideal? Far from it. But from an experience level in Ortio and Gillies, it really isn't such a terrible thing if Hiller goes down. Beats having to spend more assets on a goalie, or trying to find a bargain-basement FA available who has to learn the system (and yes, goalies absolutely have to learn a team's system). It is really not the end of the world, especially this year.

I don't think it was a case of they signed them to get to the cap floor it was that they could sign them to those deals because they needed to get to the cap floor.
They had room to overspend on guys that other teams couldn't so they made sure they got the guys they wanted to fill those spots.
But I agree if they signed them only to get to the cap floor that is a terrible reason to sign a guy to a 3 year deal.

So we can recall Ramo without needing to clear re-entry waivers right? So lets say later on, someone does want Hiller, we still have Ramo as an option to recall whenever we want? Of if an injury happens, we have some back up.
